Cabinet approves to raise Women's Marriage age from 18 to 21    

Govt to raise Women's Marriage age from 18 to 21: The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of increasing the marriage age for women from 18 years to 21 years.

Current age for marriage in India

As of present time in India, the minimum age of marriage for men is 21 years while for women it is 18 years.

Background

It was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address in August 2020 that the government would soon reconsider the age of marriage for women. The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal after 1 year of announcement.

Task Force and its recommendations

In the month of June 2020, the government had constituted a task force under the leadership of Jaya Jaitley to re-examine the right age of marriage for girls. India and Vietnam to hold bilateral meeting to strengthen cooperation in telecommunication and postal sector  

A Bilateral meeting is scheduled to be held between the Ministry of Communications, Government of India and the Ministry of Information and Communications, Socialist Republic of Viet Nam on 17th December, 2021 in Sanchar Bhawan, New Delhi to strengthen collaboration in Telecommunications and Postal Sector.

Key Highlights

The Indian side will be headed by Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chauhan while the Vietnamese delegation will be led by Nguyen Manh Hung, Minister of Information and Communications, Viet Nam.

In line with the comprehensive strategic and economic partnership and growing relations between the Republic of India and Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Ministers of the two countries will be signing a “Letter of Intent” for enhanced cooperation in the Postal Sector.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan has commanded an Indian Coast Guard Inshore Patrol Vessel, missile vessels Vibhuti and Nashak, the guided-missile corvette Kuthar and has also been the commissioning Commanding Officer the indigenously constructed state-of-the-art stealth frigate Sahyadri. His important staff assignments include Joint Director of Personnel, Director of Personnel (Policy), Director Naval Plans (Perspective Planning), and Principal Director Naval Plans at Integrated Headquarters Ministry of Defence (IHQ MoD) (Navy).


Rear Admiral Sandeep Mehta takes over as FOMA 

Rear Admiral Sandeep Mehta, VSM, assumed office as the Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area (FOMA) at Mumbai on 16 December 21.

About as 

Rear Admiral Mehta was commissioned on 01 January 1989, in the Executive branch of the Indian Navy. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla and a graduate from the Army War College, Mhow. He was on diplomatic assignment as Defence and Naval Attaché at the Embassy of India, Washington (DC) prior his promotion to the Flag rank.

His educational qualifications include a Masters degree in Nautical Science and Tactical Operations, M Phil degree in Defence and Strategic Studies and a PG Diploma in management studies.


Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh unveils commemorative stamp marking 50 years of India’s victory in 1971 Indo-Pak War  

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh unveiled an India Post special day cover and a commemorative stamp marking the golden jubilee of India’s victory during the 1971 Indo-Pak War, in New Delhi on December 16, 2021. The day is the culmination of year-long ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’ celebrations, which began in December 2020.

Background

December 16 is celebrated as ‘Vijay Diwas’ each year to mark the day of surrender and decisive victory of Indian Armed Forces over Pakistani Armed Forces. Instrument of Surrender was signed by Commander Eastern Command of Pakistan, Lieutenant General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi accepting decisive defeat in Eastern Theatre. The document was signed by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of Indian and Bangladesh Forces in Eastern Theatre Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora from the Indian side. Also present during the Surrender Ceremony were Field Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Eastern Naval Command Vice Admiral N Krishnan and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C), Eastern Air Command Air Marshal HC Dewan.

The 1971 Indo-Pak War commenced with Pakistan launching pre-emptive strikes on a large number of Indian Air Force (IAF) bases. A swift response to these unprovoked attacks was launched by the Indian Armed Forces on the Western and Eastern Fronts, on land, sea and air. Offensive action by the Indian Armed Forces led to the capture of Dhaka in East Pakistan, surrender of around 93,000 Pakistani soldiers and the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent Nation. This was the largest surrender of the Armed Forces post World War II.


India-Vietnam signs agreement to extend cooperation in Information Technology  

India-Vietnam signed an agreement to extend cooperation in the field of Information Technology. The MoU intends to foster active cooperation and exchange between private entities, Governments, institutions involved in enhancing capacity building and other public and private organizations of the two countries in the field of ICT.

Nguyen Manh Hung, Minister for Information and Communications, Vietnam visited the Ministry of Electronics & IT, Government of India and met the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology & Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrasekhar. They exchanged views on various initiatives being taken by the two countries to boost the digital economy and agreed to further enhance ICT Trade & cooperation between the two sides.


India and Vietnam sign Letter of Intent to establish partnership in Digital Media  

Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting Anurag Thakur today signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Nguyen Manh Hung, Minister of Information and Communication, Government of Vietnam on collaboration in the fields of digital media, paving the way for strengthening partnership between India and Vietnam.

The LoI envisages sharing of information and experience in establishing policies and regulatory frameworks on digital media and social networks, and conducting capacity building and training programs for media professionals and officials in the two countries.


Sarbananda Sonowal announces key initiatives to upgrade infrastructure AYUSH services in Uttarakhand  

The Ministry of AYUSH today announced a series of initiatives to strengthen the AYUSH infrastructure in the state of Uttarakhand. The initiatives announced under the National AYUSH Mission(NAM) scheme will help in promoting Ayurveda, Unani, Naturopathy, Herbal Medicines and development of AYUSH Industry in the state. Uttarakhand has been blessed with natural resources and vibrant traditions of AYUSH practices which has the capabilities to contribute to the healthcare needs of people in this region.

India’s COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage exceeds 135.99 Cr; Recovery Rate currently at 98.38%

With the administration of 70,46,805 vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 135.99 Cr (1,35,99,96,267) as per provisional reports till 7 am today.

The recovery of 7,886 patients in the last 24 hours has increased the cumulative tally of recovered patients (since the beginning of the pandemic) to 3,41,62,765.

Consequently, India’s recovery rate stands at 98.38%,highest since March 2020. 7,447 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

India’s Active Caseload is presently at 86,415. Active cases constitute 0.25% of the country's total Positive Cases, which is lowest since March 2020.

The Weekly Positivity Rate at 0.63% remains less than 1% for the last 33 days now. The Daily Positivity rate reported to be 0.59%. The daily Positivity rate has remained below 2% for the last 74 days and below 3% for 109 consecutive days now.
