INS Sindhudhvaj decommissioned after 35 years of glorious service to the nation  

INS Sindhudhvaj bid adieu to the Indian Navy on Saturday, 16 Jul 2022, serving for a glorious period of 35 years.

Background

The submarine crest depicts a gray colour nurse shark and the name means flag bearer at sea. Sindhudhvaj, as the name suggests, was the flag bearer of indigenisation and Indian Navy's efforts towards achieving Atmanirbharta in the Russian built Sindhughosh class submarines throughout her journey in the navy. She had many firsts to her credit including operationalisation of the indigenised sonar USHUS, Indigenised Satellite Communication systems Rukmani and MSS, Inertial Navigation System and Indigenised Torpedo Fire Control System.


India achieves major landmark of ‘200 Crore’ COVID-19 Vaccinations 

In a historic achievement, India’s cumulative COVID19 vaccination drive has surpassed the 200-Crore milestone today. As per provisional reports till 1 pm today, a total of 2,00,00,15,631 doses have been administered across the country. This has been achieved through 2,63,26,111 sessions.

Background

India’s nation-wide COVID19 vaccination program was launched by PM Modi on 16th January, 2021. Under his proactive and visionary leadership, India supported the research, development and manufacturing of COVID19 vaccines under the “Make-in-India” and “Make-for-World” Strategy, embarked on the use of cutting-edge technologies like CoWIN for evaluating geographical coverage, tracking AEFI for vaccines, promoting inclusivity and for providing a single reference point for citizens to follow their vaccination schedule, and prioritized vaccine administration based on scientific evidence and global best practices.

India’s free and voluntary nationwide COVID19 vaccination exercise is also being carried out in a citizen friendly approach through initiatives like Har Ghar Dastak, Workplace CVC, School based vaccination, vaccination of persons with no identity documents, Near-to-Home CVC and Mobile Vaccination Teams. With 71% of CVCs located in rural areas and over 51% of vaccine doses administered to women, India’s National COVID19 Vaccination Programme also ensured geographical and gender equity.

Govt launches 75 day long ‘COVID Vaccination Amrit Mahotsav’ to provide free precaution dose to 18 to 59 age group 

On 15th July 2022, the Union Government launched a 75 day long ‘COVID Vaccination Amrit Mahotsav’ to provide free precaution dose to all eligible adult population at Government COVID Vaccination Centres (CVCs). This special drive, part of the celebration for Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, is being implemented in a ‘mission mode’ to increase uptake of precaution dose of COVID vaccine.


Bangladesh sign USD 500 million loan MoU with World Bank to improve disaster preparedness for floods 

Bangladesh signed a USD 500 million loan memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the World Bank to improve disaster preparedness against inland flooding in 14 flood-prone districts benefiting over 1.25 million  people.

The credit has been approved under the Resilient Infrastructure for Adoption and Vulnerability Reduction (RIVER) project of the World Bank.

The project will help save lives and properties in the highly flood-prone districts in the Teesta-Brahmaputra-Jamuna, Padma, and Surma-Meghna river basins, which include Nilpamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Bogura, Pabna, Sirajganj, Rajbari, Faridpur, Gopalganj, Madaripur, and Sunamganj, Habiganj.

Aishwary clinches gold in men's 50m rifle 3 position at Changwon Shooting World Cup 2022 

Junior world champion Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar clinched gold in the Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions (3P) event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun stage in Changwon South Korea.

Aishwary defeated Hungarian Zakan Pekler 16-12 in the gold medal match.


Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa bags Paracin Open Chess title in Serbia

The 16-year-old Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has bagged the Paracin Open 'A' chess tournament 2022 in Serbia. Second seed Praggnanandhaa scored 8 points from nine rounds. Top seed Alexandr Predke finished second with 7.5 points.
