CWG-2022: Weightlifter Gurdeep Singh clinches bronze medal at Birmingham Commonwealth Games
Commonwealth Games 2022: Weightlifter Gurdeep Singh clinched a bronze medal in the +109 kg category of men's weightlifting at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games (CWG 2022).
The-26-year-old Gurdeep Singh from Punjab lifted a total of 390kg to win the bronze medal, which includes 167kg in snatch and 223kg in clean and jerk. Bronze medal in weightlifting won by Gurdeep Singh is India's first medal in the heavyweight category at CWG.
With this, India’s medal tally reaches 17 with 5 golds, 6 silvers and 6 bronze medals.
Pakistan's Muhammad Nooh Butt won the gold medal for his record breaking lift of 405 kg (173 kg + 232 kg).
About Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 Bronze Medalist Weightlifter Gurdeep Singh
Gurdeep Singh started Weightlifting from Khanna district of Punjab in the year 2010. His father, who is a farmer, pushed him into Weightlifting primarily to keep his son active and not just spend all day doing nothing.
His first coach in khanna recognised Gurdeep as a prospect in the sport and recommended Indian team Head Coach Mr. Vijay Sharma to induct him in the National camp.
Gurdeep Singh joined the Indian National Camp in the year 2015 and a person who merely started the sport to keep him busy is the top talent in Weightlifting for India in the Heavyweight category.
