Justice Uday Umesh Lalit appointed as 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI)
President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Judge of the Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India (CJI). Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will take over as the 49th Chief Justice of India on 27th August 2022.
Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India in August
2014 from the Bar. Justice Lalit will become the second Chief Justice of India to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court from the Bar, after Justice S.M. Sikri, who served as the 13th CJI in 1971. Cabinet approves continuation of PMAY-U Yojana up to 31st December 2024
The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for continuation of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) up to 31st December 2024 wherein financial assistance is to be provided for the completion of already sanctioned 122.69 lakh houses till 31stMarch 2022.
Background
PMAY-U: Housing for All is one of the major flagship programmes being implemented by Government of India to provide all weather pucca houses to all eligible beneficiaries in the urban areas of the country through States/UTs/Central Nodal Agencies.
The scheme covers the entire urban area of the country, i.e., all statutory towns as per Census 2011 and towns notified subsequently, including Notified Planning/ Development Areas.
The scheme is being implemented through four verticals: Beneficiary Led Construction/ Enhancement (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), In-situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR) and Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS). While the Govt of India provides financial assistance, State Govt/UTs implement the scheme including selection of beneficiaries.
Cabinet approves ratification of 11th Additional protocol to Constitution of Universal Postal Union
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the ratification of amendments to the Constitution of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) as contained in the Eleventh Additional Protocol to the Constitution signed during the 27th Congress of the Universal Postal Union held at Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) from 9-27 August, 2021.
PM Modi dedicates 2G Ethanol Plant in Panipat
On the occasion of World Biofuel Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated the 2nd generation (2G) Ethanol Plant in Panipat, Haryana to the nation today via video conferencing.
The project will have zero liquid discharge. By reducing the burning of rice straw (parali), the project will reduce Greenhouse Gases equivalent to about 3 lakh tonnes of Carbon Dioxide equivalent emissions per annum, which can be understood as equivalent to replacing nearly 63,000 cars annually on the country's roads.
India’s COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage exceeds 207.03 Cr; Recovery Rate currently stands at 98.52%
India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 207.03 Cr (2,07,03,71,204) as per provisional reports till 7 am today.
COVID-19 vaccination for the age group 12-14 years was started on 16 March, 2022. So far, more than 3.96 Cr (3,96,04,796) adolescents have been administered with the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Similarly, the COVID-19 precaution dose administration for age group 18-59 years also started from 10th April, 2022 onwards.
India’s Active Caseload currently stands at 1,28,261. Active cases now constitute 0.29% of the country's total Positive Cases. 16,047 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours.
Consequently, India’s recovery rate stands at 98.52%. 19,539 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours and the cumulative tally of recovered patients (since the beginning of the pandemic) is now at 4,35,35,610.
The Weekly Positivity Rate in the country currently stands at 4.90% and the Daily Positivityrate is reported to be 4.94%.
