Govt notifies Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022 

Government has notified Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022 to ensure environmentally sound management of waste batteries.

As pet the Environment Ministry the new rules will replace Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001. The rules cover all types of batteries - Electric Vehicle batteries, portable batteries, automotive batteries and industrial batteries.


Envoys of four nations present credentials to President Droupadi Murmu    

The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu accepted credentials from the Ambassadors of Ecuador, Somalia, Germany and Suriname at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan (August 26, 2022). Those who presented their credentials were:

  2. Ahmed Ali Dahir, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia

38th India and Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission Meeting held in New Delhi 

The 38th Meeting of Ministerial level Joint Rivers Commission of India and Bangladesh was held in New Delhi.

The meeting assumes significance as it was held after a long gap of 12 years, though the technical interactions under the framework of JRC have continued in the intervening period. The meeting was preceded by Water Resources Secretary-level interaction on Tuesday, 23rd August, 2022.

Delegations 

The Indian delegation was led by Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Jal Shakti. The Bangladesh delegation was led by Zaheed Farooque, State Minister for Water Resources.

Discussion 

The discussions during this bilateral meeting were held on a number of ongoing bilateral issues of mutual interest including river water sharing of common rivers, sharing of flood data, addressing river pollution, conducting joint studies on sedimentation management, river bank protection works etc. 

Both sides finalized the text of MoU on Interim Water Sharing of Kushiyara river. Both sides also welcomed finalization of the design and location of water intake point on the Feni River to meet the drinking water needs of Sabroom town in Tripura as per the October 2019 India -Bangladesh MoU on this subject.

Background

India and Bangladesh share 54 rivers, of which 7 rivers have been identified earlier for developing framework of water sharing agreements on priority. During the meeting, it has been agreed to widen this area of ongoing cooperation by including 8 more rivers for data exchange. The matter will be further discussed at the Technical Level Committee of JRC.

The Joint Rivers Commission of India and Bangladesh was constituted in the year 1972 as a bilateral mechanism to address issues of mutual interest on common / border / transboundary rivers.


Bangladesh and India sign consultancy contract for two railway projects  

Bangladesh and India signed two contracts for the construction of a new broad-gauge line between Khulna- Darsana and conversion of metre gauge line into dual-gauge line between Parbatipur and Kaunia.

The two projects are being implemented with financing under the Indian Line of Credit (LoC).

India’s COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage exceeds 211.13 Cr; Recovery Rate currently stands at 98.61%

India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 211.13 Cr (2,11,13,94,639) as per provisional reports till 7 am today.

COVID-19 vaccination for the age group 12-14 years was started on 16 March, 2022. So far, more than 4.01 Cr (4,01,69,223) adolescents have been administered with the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Similarly, the COVID-19 precaution dose administration for age group 18-59 years also started from 10th April, 2022 onwards.

India’s Active Caseload currently stands at 90,707. Active cases now constitute 0.20% of the country's total Positive Cases. 10,256 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

Consequently, India’s recovery rate stands at 98.61%. 13,528 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours and the cumulative tally of recovered patients (since the beginning of the pandemic) is now at 4,37,70,913.

The Weekly Positivity Rate in the country currently stands at 3.02% and the Daily Positivity rate is reported to be 2.43%.
