Justice Uday Umesh Lalit takes oath as 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI)   

Justice UU Lalit appointed as 49th CJI: Justice Uday Umesh Lalit took oath as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI).President Droupadi Murmu administered him the oath as the 49th Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit succeeds Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice NV Ramana, who retired on 26th August 2022. Justice UU Lalit will serve as the Chief Justice of India for 74 days, a shorter tenure than the average.

Background 

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India in August 2014 from the Bar. Justice Lalit will become the second Chief Justice of India to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court from the Bar, after Justice S.M. Sikri, who served as the 13th CJI in 1971. Justice Lalit has served as a Member of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee for two terms.

About 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Uday Umesh Lalit

Indian Naval Ship Sumedha visits Port Klang in Malaysia 

As part of the Indian Navy's long-range operational deployment, INS Sumedha deployed to South East Asia, visited Port Klang, Malaysia on 27 August 2022. The ship is on her return
passage from Perth, Australia where she participated in the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.

INS Sumedha's visit to Port Klang is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, enhancing maritime cooperation and interoperability between the Indian Navy and Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). Both navies have been collaborating on various fronts and are playing a critical role in ensuring Maritime Security and Safety of global commons. 

The bilateral engagements between both navies are on an upswing with the participation of KD Lekiu in MILAN 2022 at Visakhapatnam followed by the conduct of the IN-RMN bilateral maritime exercise Samudra Lakshmana at Kota Kinabalu in May 2022.

About INS Sumedha

INS Sumedha is an indigenously built Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel deployed for multiple roles independently and in support of Fleet Operations. She is part of the Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam and functions under the operational command of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.


Indian Economy to grow at 7.4% for FY-2022-23: FM Nirmala Sitharaman 

As per the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman the Indian economy will grow at the rate of 7.4 percent in the current fiscal as well as in the next year.

The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have projected India's growth to be the fastest for the next two fiscal years, and their estimates are in sync with that of the Reserve Bank of India.

India’s COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage exceeds 211.39 Cr; Recovery Rate currently stands at 98.62%

India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 211.39 Cr (2,11,39,81,444) as per provisional reports till 7 am today.

COVID-19 vaccination for the age group 12-14 years was started on 16 March, 2022. So far, more than 4.02 Cr (4,02,11,871) adolescents have been administered with the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Similarly, the COVID-19 precaution dose administration for age group 18-59 years also started from 10th April, 2022 onwards.

India’s Active Caseload currently stands at 87,311. Active cases now constitute 0.20% of the country's total Positive Cases. 9,520 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

Consequently, India’s recovery rate stands at 98.62%. 12,875 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours and the cumulative tally of recovered patients (since the beginning of the pandemic) is now at 4,37,83,788.

The Weekly Positivity Rate in the country currently stands at 2.80% and the Daily Positivity rate is reported to be 2.50%.
