India, US agree to constitute task force to boost cooperation in semiconductor industry  

The US has supported the development of a fabrication ecosystem in India in the field of semiconductors, and encouraged joint ventures and partnerships for mature technology nodes and advanced packaging.

Both nations have agreed to constitute a task force involving India’s Semiconductor Mission, India Electronics Semiconductor Association, and the US Semiconductor Industry Association.

Aims 

The aim is to develop a readiness assessment to identify near-term opportunities and facilitate longer-term development of semiconductor ecosystems.


First Employment Working Group Meeting of G20 held in Jodhpur

Under India’s G20 Presidency, the First Employment Working Group meeting is being organized at Jodhpur from 2-4 February 2023. The Ministry of Labour and Employment is leading the discussions for the Employment Working Group (EWG) which has a mandate of addressing priority labour, employment and social issues.

The First G20 Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting will be held in Bengaluru from February 5-7, 2023. The G20 members represent around 85% of the global GDP, over 75% of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.


First G20 Sustainable Financial Working Group meeting begins in Guwahati 

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, Waterways and AYUSH, Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the 1st Sustainable Financial Working Group (SFWG) meeting under India’s G20 Presidency.

Participate by 

Over 100 delegates from the member countries of G20, guest countries and different international organizations are attending the two day long 1st Sustainable Financial Working Group meeting.

Agenda

The three main agenda of the meeting are- Mobilizing timely and adequate resources for climate action; Enabling finance for sustainable development and Capacity building for the entire ecosystem of sustainable development.

RBI imposes ₹1 lakh penalty on Ilkal Co-operative Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed, by an order dated January 23, 2023, a monetary penalty of ₹1.00 lakh (Rupees One lakh only) on Ilkal Co-operative Bank Ltd. Ilkal, Karnataka for non-adherence / violation of directions issued on Income Recognition, Asset Classification, Provisioning and Other Related Matters – Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs).


Digi Yatra to be implemented at Kolkata, Pune, Vijayawada and Hyderabad Airports by March 2023 

Digi Yatra policy is an initiative launched by the Ministry of Civil Aviation for a biometric boarding system using Facial Recognition Technology.

Aims  

It aims at providing seamless and hassle-free experience for passengers at airports. Its main objective is to enhance passenger experience by eliminating the need for verification of ticket and ID at multiple touch points and to achieve better throughput through existing infrastructure using a Digital Framework.

Background

Digi Yatra is to be implemented across airports in a phased manner. In first phase, Digi Yatra has been launched on 01.12.2022 at Delhi, Bangalore and Varanasi Airports for providing passengers contactless, paperless check-in and boarding process based on facial biometrics. 

The implementation of Digi Yatra under phase I is also planned at Kolkata, Pune, Vijayawada and Hyderabad Airports by March 2023 and across various airports in the country in phased manner. Digital transformation of aviation sector is an ongoing endeavour. As per requirement, the digitisation of various processes in aviation sector is undertaken.


Legendary filmmaker K. Vishwanath passes away at 92 

Legendary filmmaker and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee K. Viswanath passed away in Hyderabad. He was 92.

K. Viswanath received the highest recognition in Indian Cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2016. He received Padma Shri in 1992, five National Awards, and 20 Nandi Awards besides 10 Filmfare trophies including the Lifetime Achievement award.


MoHUA signs MoU to develop Waste to Wealth plants in million plus cities 

Union Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Budget 2023-2024 listing the seven priorities or the ‘Saptarishi’ guiding us through the Amrit Kaal. In the ‘Green Growth’ segment, 500 new Waste to Wealth plants will be established under the GOBARdhan scheme for promoting the circular economy. These will include 200 compressed biogas plants, 75 in urban areas, 300 community or cluster-based plants, at a total investment of Rs 10,000 Cr.

As part of furthering the ‘Green Growth’ agenda, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Engineers India Limited to develop Waste to Energy and bio-methanation projects in cities with a population of million plus.


Railways registers 73% growth in revenue earnings from passenger segment

Railways have registered an increase of 73 per cent in revenue earnings of the passenger segment. The total earnings in the passenger segment from April to January 2023 are 54 thousand 733 crore rupees in comparison to around 31 thousand crore rupees last year.

As per the Railways Ministry the total approximate number of passengers booked during the same period is six thousand 590 lakhs as compared to six thousand 181 lakhs during the same period last year.
