India – USA 5th Commercial Dialogue 2023 held in New Delhi  

On the invitation of Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, the US Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo visited New Delhi, India from March 7 to 10, 2023, to participate in the India-US bilateral Commercial Dialogue 2023.

Co-chaired by the Minister and the Secretary, the Commercial Dialogue is a part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the US-India Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

India – USA 5th Commercial Dialogue 2023: Key Highlights 

Gina Raimondo led a high-level Business delegation of US CEOs for the CEO Forum. CEO Forum is also focusing on shared strategic priorities in an outcome-oriented way. The CEO Forum was itself also re-launched in November 2022.

The India -US Commercial Dialogue meeting was held on 10 March 2023 at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi. During the meeting, the Minister and the Secretary acknowledged that the bilateral goods and services trade has almost doubled since 2014, surpassing $191 billion recorded in 2022.

Both sides welcomed further steps to enhance their commercial collaboration and tap into market potential across multiple sectors, and also enable an environment for investment by small and medium-sized industries (MSME) and startups.

One of the major outcomes was signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on establishing semiconductor supply chain and innovation partnership under the framework of India – US Commercial Dialogue.

MoD signs Rs 667 crore contract for six Dornier-228 aircraft from HAL 

The Ministry of Defence signed a contract for procurement of six Dornier-228 aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at a cost of Rs 667 crore.

Key Highlights 

The aircraft was used by IAF for Route Transport Role and communication duties. Subsequently, it has also been used for training of transport pilots of the IAF. The present lot of six aircraft will be procured with an upgraded fuel-efficient engine coupled with a five bladed composite propeller.

The aircraft is ideally suited for short haul operations from semi-prepared/short runways of the North East and island chains of India. The addition of the six aircraft will further bolster the operational capability of the IAF in the remote areas.

President Droupadi Murmu appoints Kardak Ete as additional judge of Gauhati High Court: In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, vide notification dated 10.03.2023, is pleased to appoint Kardak Ete, as an Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court for a period of two years with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.

World Food India-2023 to be held in New Delhi from 3-5 Nov

The second edition of 'World Food India-2023’ will be organised by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, from 3-5 November, 2023 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

Australian PM Anthony Albanese visits INS Vikrant 

The Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited INS Vikrant in Mumbai as part of his visit to India from 08 to 11 March 2023. This is his first bilateral visit to India after he assumed charge in May 2022.

The Australian PM was received onboard by Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff. Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command was also present. 

The Prime Minister was accorded a guard of honour onboard and briefed about the roles and capabilities of INS Vikrant. He was also introduced to the Light Combat Aircraft. He then interacted with a cross-section of personnel of the Indian Navy.

Mark Hammond Chief of Navy, Royal Australian Navy (CN) visit to India

Vice admiral Mark Hammond, Chief of Navy, Royal Australian Navy (CN) is on a three-day official visit to India from 09 – 11 March 2023. VAdm Mark Hammond interacted with Adm R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, at New Delhi.

During the interaction, avenues to strengthen the growing cooperation between the two nations and navies, cooperative ways to deal with prevalent/ emerging maritime security challenges, and initiatives to enhance collaboration and interoperability towards realisation of a Free, Open and Inclusive Indo-Pacific/ IOR, were discussed.
