PM Modi to inaugurate ITU Area Office & Innovation Centre 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Area office & Innovation Centre in India at a programme in Vigyan Bhawan on 22nd March, 2023 (today).

PM Modi will unveil Bharat 6G Vision Document and launch 6G R&D Test Bed. He will also launch ‘Call before u dig’ App. Prime Minister Modi will also address the gathering on the occasion.

ITU Area Office & Innovation Centre 

ITU is the United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs). Headquartered in Geneva, it has a network of field offices, regional Offices and area offices. India signed a Host Country Agreement in March 2022 with ITU for establishment of Area Office. The Area Office in India also envisaged to have an Innovation Centre embedded to it, making it unique among other area offices of ITU. 

The Area Office, which is fully funded by India, is located on the second floor of the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) building at Mehrauli New Delhi. It will serve India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Afghanistan and Iran, enhancing coordination among nations and fostering mutually beneficial economic cooperation in the region.

Bharat 6G Vision Document 

Bharat 6G vision document is prepared by Technology Innovation Group on 6G (TIG-6G) that was constituted in November 2021 with members from various Ministries/Departments, research and development institutions, academia, standardisation bodies, Telecom Service Providers and industry to develop roadmap and action plans for 6G in India. 

6G Test bed will provide academic institutions, industry, start-ups, MSMEs, industry etc, a platform to test and validate the evolving ICT technologies. The Bharat 6G Vision Document and 6G Test bed will provide an enabling environment for innovation, capacity building and faster technology adoption in the country.


G Krishnakumar appoints as BPCL Chairman & Managing Director

G Krishnakumar appoints as BPCL ChairmanBharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) appointed G. Krishnakumar as the Chairman and Managing Director. Krishnakumar is currently serving as the Executive Director of the BPCL.

Krishnakumar replaces Arun Kumar Singh, who retired as chairman in October 2022.

INS Sujata visits Port Maputo in Mozambique 

INS Sujata, a ship based at Southern Naval Command, Kochi, visited Port Maputo, Mozambique as a part of Overseas Deployment from 19 to 21 March 2023.

About 40 personnel of the Mozambican Navy visited the ship for Cross deck training, which included walkaround of training facilities, briefing about diving ops, training on VBSS and light weapons, visual communication and maintenance of machinery and hygiene onboard. 

Various other activities such as combined morning yoga session, soccer match were organised between the personnel of both the Navies. A reception was also hosted onboard Sujata which was attended by several Indian/ Mozambican dignitaries/ diplomats.

The visit by INS Sujata at Maputo, Mozambique further enhanced the mutual cooperation and bilateral ties between the two Navies.


Bangladesh started its first submarine base 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the first submarine base of Bangladesh ‘BNS Sheikh Hasina’ at Pekua in Cox’s Bazar.


IMF approves Sri Lanka’s bailout package 

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved Sri Lanka’s bailout program under an Extended Fund Facility.

As per IMF the first tranche of the loan will be released in the next couple of days. Sri Lanka will immediately receive an initial disbursement of 333 million US Dollars. The extended fund facility of 3 billion dollars will be available through tranches over a 4 year period.


Asia’s largest 4-metre International Liquid Mirror Telescope inaugurates in Devasthal, UK 

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology Jitendra Singh inaugurated Asia’s largest 4-metre International Liquid Mirror Telescope at Devasthal in Uttarakhand in the presence of the Governor of Uttarakhand Lt. Gen (Retd.) Gurmeet Singh.

Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) announced that the world-class 4-metre International Liquid Mirror Telescope (ILMT) is now ready to explore the deep celestial sky. It achieved its first light in the 2nd week of May 2022. 

The telescope is located at an altitude of 2450 metre at the Devasthal Observatory campus of ARIES, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India in Nainital district, Uttarakhand.

The Lok Sabha today passed the Appropriation (No 2) Bill 2023 with voice votes amid din. The Bill was introduced in the House by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary.


NTPC signs MoU with Indian Army for implementation of Green Hydrogen Projects 

NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with INDIAN ARMY for setting up Green Hydrogen Projects in its establishments on Build, Own and Operate (BOO) model.

The intent is to reduce complex logistics, dependence on fossil fuels and to accelerate decarbonization.

Key Highlights 

The MoU was signed by Mr. Mohit Bhargava, CEO (NTPC REL) and Lt. General Rajinder Dewan, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, QMG.

Under the ambit of the MoU, a joint identification of potential sites would be undertaken for setting up of green hydrogen projects for supplying electricity, in a phased manner. NTPC REL will also design, develop, and install renewable energy projects (solar, wind etc.) for the Indian Army.

The MoU signals an advanced approach for modernization by Indian Army and NTPC’s commitment to assist the nation in its decarbonization goals. This agreement is a first of its kind and ushers in a new era of border security backed with energy security for the lines of defence of the country.


NTPC Green Energy sign agreement with Indian Oil for setting up renewable energy projects 

NGEL, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, has signed a Joint Venture agreement with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for setting up of renewable energy projects to meet Round the Clock power requirement of IOCL Refineries.

NTPC Limited, through its wholly owned subsidiary, NGEL, has set an ambitious target of building a renewable generation portfolio of 60 GW over the next decade to aggressively pursue its green energy business.

The signing of this Joint Venture Agreement between the two Maharatna behemoths will enable NTPC Limited and Indian Oil to meet the Government of India's Clean Energy Targets in their respective core businesses.


CIVIL-20 India 2023 Working Committee Meeting held in Nagpur 

The Working Committee Meeting of CIVIL20 India 2023 started at Nagpur. The meeting was attended by the Steering Committee (SC) Members, the International Advisory Committee (IAC) members and the Working Group Coordinators of CIVIL-20 India 2023.

The CIVIL-20 as an official engagement group of G20 is still relevant and helps to incorporate social issues.

The floor was then opened for discussion and participants gave their suggestions and recommendations on the activities and concept notes of the CIVIL-20 India Working Groups.


Bharat Gaurav train for North-eastern states flagged off from Delhi

Meenakashi Lekhi, Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, Government of India, flagged off Bharat Gaurav Train “North East Discovery: Beyond Guwahati”, specially designed tour to cover the North eastern states of India, from Delhi Safdarjung station.

TOPS approves Bajrang and Vinesh Phogat's requests to train in Kyrgyzstan and Poland 

Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) has approved wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat's request for an International training camp in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan, and Spala (Poland) respectively.

While Bajrang requested to train in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan for 16 days, Vinesh requested to train at the Olympic Preparation Center in Spala (Poland) for 11 days.
