CPI inflation eases to 4.70% in April 2023 

India's consumer price index (CPI) inflation in the month of April 2023 eased to an 18-month low of 4.70 per cent, data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO).

While the CPI was 5.66% in March 2023 and 7.79% in April a year ago.

India's consumer price index (CPI): Key Highlights 

Consumer Food Price Index fell to 3.84%, as compared to 4.79% in the previous month and 8.31% in April 2022. Rural inflation in April stood at 4.68%, while urban inflation was at 4.85%.

The price data was collected from selected 1114 urban markets and 1181 villages covering all States/UTs through personal visits by field staff of Field Operations Division of NSO, MoSPI on a weekly roster. During the month of April 2023, NSO collected prices from 99.83% villages and 98.56% urban Markets while the Market-wise prices reported therein were 89.90% for rural and 93.14% for urban.


RBI imposes ₹2.92 crore penalty on Canara Bank 

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹2.92 crore (Rupees Two crore ninety-two lakh only) on Canara Bank for non-compliance with the provisions of directions issued by Reserve Bank under ‘Reserve Bank of India (Interest Rate on Advances) Directions, 2016’, Reserve Bank of India (Interest Rate on Deposits) Directions, 2016, ‘Compliance function in banks’, ‘Customer Protection - Limiting Liability of Customers in Unauthorised Electronic Banking Transactions’, ‘Customer Service in Banks’ and ‘Reserve Bank of India – (Know Your Customer (KYC)) Direction, 2016’.


RBI launches '100 Days 100 Pays' Campaign for Return of Unclaimed Deposits 

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched the '100 Days 100 Pays' Campaign for Return of Unclaimed Deposits.

The Reserve Bank of India today announced a ‘100 Days 100 Pays’ campaign for banks to trace and settle the top 100 unclaimed deposits of every bank in every district of the country within 100 days. This measure will complement the ongoing efforts and initiatives by the Reserve Bank to reduce the quantum of unclaimed deposits in the banking system and return such deposits to their rightful owners/ claimants.

Background  

Balances in savings / current accounts which are not operated for 10 years, or term deposits not claimed within 10 years from date of maturity are classified as “Unclaimed Deposits”. These amounts are transferred by banks to “Depositor Education and Awareness” (DEA) Fund maintained by the Reserve Bank of India. 

The Reserve Bank, from time to time, through its public awareness initiatives, has been encouraging members of public to identify and approach the bank concerned for claiming such deposits.


6th Indian Ocean Conference begins in Dhaka 

The 6th edition of Indian Ocean Conference inaugurated by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka. India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar delivered the keynote address during the opening ceremony.

More than 150 participants from 25 countries are taking part in the 6th Indian Ocean Conference being hosted by Bangladesh.


INS Delhi and Satpura visit Sihanoukville, Cambodia 

As part of Indian Navy’s deployment to ASEAN countries, Indian Naval ships Delhi and Satpura, under the command of Rear Admiral Gurcharan Singh, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF), are making a port call at Sihanoukville, Cambodia from 11 - 14 May 2023. The port call demonstrates India’s cordial ties with the Kingdom of Cambodia.

INS Delhi is India’s first indigenously built guided missile Destroyer and INS Satpura is an indigenouS multi purpose stealth Frigate. The two ships are equipped with a versatile array of weapons and sensors and can carry multi-role helicopters. Both ships are a testimony of India’s advanced ship design and shipbuilding capabilities.


8th meeting of Agriculture Ministers of SCO held via video conferencing 

The 8th meeting of Agriculture Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member countries was held today through video conferencing under the chairmanship of Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar.

Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, China and Pakistan participated in it along with India. Under the chairmanship of India, SCO member countries adopted the Smart Agriculture project.


Prof. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar gets the first Astronomical Society of India Govind Swarup Lifetime Achievement Award in Pune 

The most befitting recipient of the very first ASI Govind Swarup Lifetime Achievement award is Prof. Jayant V. Narlikar, an astronomer par-excellence, the founding director of IUCAA, Pune and also a past President of the ASI.

Though the award was announced earlier this year at the 41st meeting of the ASI held at IIT Indore, Prof. Narlikar was unable to travel to receive it. The President of the ASI, Prof. Dipankar Banerjee, was in Pune to personally hand over the award to Prof. Narlikar and felicitate him.

Prof. Jayant V. Narlikar was amongst the first to initiate cosmology research in India. He came up with an idea of creating a dedicated center to nucleate and spread astronomy curriculum and research in the Indian Universities. His dream was fulfilled with his hard work by the formation of IUCAA. He has been a motivational figure for young aspiring minds for decades. His continued active involvement in science and outreach is an inspiration to all of us.

Centre issues order against top 5 e-commerce platforms for selling seat belt alarm stopper clips 

In view of violation of Consumer Protection Act, 2019, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued orders against top five e-commerce platforms for selling car seat belt alarm stopper clips. The clips compromise life and safety of consumers by stopping alarm beeps when not wearing seat belts.

Headed by Chief Commissioner, Mrs. Nidhi Khare, CCPA passed orders against Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, Shopclues and Meesho for violation of consumer rights and unfair trade practice.


VP Jagdeep Dhankhar to visit Rajasthan on 14th May

The Vice-President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar will visit Rajasthan (Pushkar, Kharnal and Merta City) on May 14, 2023. The Vice-President will offer prayers at the sacred Brahma temple and Shri Jat Shiva temple, Pushkar.

The Vice-President will later visit Kharnal, Nagaur, the birthplace of celebrated and revered social reformer Veer Tejaji. The Vice-President will visit Merta City, Nagaur, to unveil the statue of former Union Minister, Late Shri Nathuram Mirdha.

Renowned freedom fighter and eminent leader of the farming community from Nagaur, Late Nathuram Mirdha was a six-time Member of Lok Sabha and served as a Union Minister from 1979-80 & 1989-90. He served as Chairman of National Agriculture Prices Commission. He was also a four-time Member of Legislative Assembly, Rajasthan and served as a Cabinet Minister in Rajasthan Government.
