RBI, BIS launch global technology competition ‘G20 TechSprint’    

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Bank for International Settlements (BIS) have launched G20 TechSprint, a global technology competition. RBI and the BIS Innovation Hub have jointly announced the fourth edition of the G20 TechSprint.

G20 TechSprint: Key Highlights  

RBI and BIS invite global innovators to help develop innovative technology solutions for cross-border payments. The competition is open to developers from around the world for submitting applications from May 04, 2023 to June 04, 2023 and the TechSprint will conclude around August/ September 2023.

Shortlisted teams will be invited to develop their solutions over a six-week period and each team will be eligible for a stipend of INR 8,00,000 (approximately USD 10,000).

An independent panel of experts will select the most promising solution to each problem statement from the shortlisted solutions, to be announced at a final event in August/ September 2023. The winners for each problem statement will receive an award of INR 40,00,000.


Sarbananda Sonowal to receive First Indian Cargo Ship docking in Myanmar on May 9 

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal will be receiving the first Indian cargo ship at Sittwe Port in Myanmar on May 9, 2023.

The ceremony is likely to inaugurate regular transit of cargo ships between Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, India to Sittwe Port in Rakhine state of Myanmar, heralding a new age of transportation between the two countries.

Sittwe Port 

Sittwe port development is part of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP). Once operationalised, the Sittwe port will enable multi-modal transit connectivity with South East Asia. 

The Sittwe Port has been developed under a framework agreement between India and Myanmar for the construction and operation of a Multimodal Transit Transport Facility on Kaladan river connecting the Sittwe port in Myanmar with the state of Mizoram in India.


Shantanu Thakur flags off Direct Shipping Service between Tuticorin to Maldives 

Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur flagged off the vessel ‘M.V. MSS Galena’ from V.O. Chidambaranar Port, as the Direct Shipping Service between Tuticorin to Maldives.

Background

To take this forward and to reaffirm the mutual understanding between the two Nations this service is being operated as a culmination of the Memorandum of Understanding signed for Establishment of Passenger and Cargo Services by Sea between Ministry of Port, Shipping & Waterways, Government of India, and Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, Government of Maldives on 08.06.2019, during the State Visit of Prime Minister of India to Maldives. This is also in line with ‘Neighbourhood-First Policy’ and the vision of Security and Growth for all in the Region.

3800 Indians evacuated from conflict-hit Sudan under Operation Kaveri 

Government says around 3800 Indians have been evacuated from the conflict-hit #Sudan under Operation Kaveri so far.

In a tweet, External Affairs Ministry's spokesperson Arindam Bagchi says Indian Air Force aircraft with 47 evacuees from Sudan is on its way to Delhi from Jeddah.


10th Landport between India and Bangladesh inaugurated in Meghalaya 

The 10th Landport between India and Bangladesh was inaugurated at Dawki in Meghalaya by State Minister for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai.

Dawki landport provides facilities like the passenger and cargo terminal buildings, warehouse, canteen, toilet blocks for export drivers, sewage treatment plant among others to facilitate movement of people and trade between the two countries.


President Droupadi Murmu transfers two judges to different High Courts 

President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu after consultation with the Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud is pleased to transfer (i) Ms. Justice V.M. Velumani from Madras High Court to Calcutta High Court and (ii) Shri Justice Annireddy Abhishek Reddy from High Court of Telangana to the Patna High Court and to direct them to assume charge of their offices in the respective High Courts.
