Heeralal Samariya appointed as new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC)

Heeralal Samariya appointed as CIC: The Central Government has appointed senior IAS officer Heeralal Samariya as the Chief Information Commissioner in the Central Information Commission and he has assumed charge.

Heeralal Samariya was sworn in as the head of the Central Information Commission (CIC) by President Draupadi Murmu.

63 year-old Samariya has replaced Chief Information Commissioner YK Sinha, whose tenure ended on October 3, 2023. Heeralal is a 1985 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) (Retd.) officer of Telangana cadre.

Before this appointment, Samariya had taken oath as Information Commissioner in the Central Information Commission on 7 November 2020. He has also served as Labor and Employment Secretary.

About CIC Heeralal Samariya

Who is new CIC Heeralal Samariya: Heeralal was born on 14 September 1960 in a village named Pahadi Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. He hold a BE (Civil) Honors degree from Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) Jaipur Rajasthan University in the year 1982 and joined the Indian Administrative Service in Telangana cadre in 1985.

Central Information Commission

Central Information Commission is a constitutional body of the Government of India. It was established in 2005 by the government of current Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh under the Right to Information Act.

CIC Commission: Objective 

The objective of Central Information Commission (CIC) is to provide information to those applicants who are not completely satisfied with the information sought from the Government Department or Ministry or have not been given the information.

No. of Commissioners in CIC 

The CIC Commission is headed by the Chief Information Commissioner and can have a maximum of 10 Information Commissioners.

Appointment of Chief Information Commissioner

The President of India appoints the Chief Information Commissioner on the basis of the recommendation of a committee. This committee consists of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and a Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister.

A Chief Information Commissioner and an Information Commissioner may hold office until they attain the age of 65 years and until further orders of the Central Government.
