President Droapadi Murmu has appointed Justice Joymalya Bagchi, Judge, Calcutta High Court as a judge of the Supreme Court of India with effect from the date he assumed charge of his office. With the appointment of Justice Joymalya Bagchi, the number of judges in the Supreme Court has increased to 33.

Justice Joymalya Bagchi Appointed As Supreme Court Judge
Calcutta High Court Judge Joymalya Bagchi was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. President Droapadi Murmu has approved the appointment of Justice Joymalya Bagchi as a Supreme Court judge.

The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on 06th March, 2025 deliberated on and discussed the names of Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of the High Courts eligible for appointment to the Supreme Court.
After carefully evaluating merit, integrity and competence and also accommodating a plurality of considerations, the Collegium has recommended appointment of Justice Joymalya Bagchi, presently a Judge of the High Court at Calcutta, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.

The Collegium has, therefore, unanimously resolved to recommend that Justice Joymalya Bagchi be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
After the retirement of Justice Altamas Kabir on 18th July 2013 as Chief Justice of India, there has not been any Chief Justice of India from the High Court at Calcutta.
Justice Joymalya Bagchi to be the Chief Justice of India
On the retirement of Justice K.V. Viswanathan on 25th May 2031, Justice Joymalya Bagchi would be in line to assume office as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) till his retirement on 2nd October 2031.
Tenure of Justice Joymalya Bagchi
Justice Joymalya Bagchi will have a tenure of more than six years as a Supreme Court Judge before assuming the office of the Chief Justice of India.
About Justice Joymalya Bagchi, Judge, Supreme Court
Joymalya Bagchi was born on 3rd October, 1966. He completed his schooling from Calcutta Boys' School and passed LLB (five-year course) from Calcutta University in 1991. He secured first position in all the LLB examinations and enrolled as an advocate on 28 November, 1991.
Justice Joymalya Bagchi was appointed as a Judge of the High Court at Calcutta on 27th June 2011 and transferred to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on 4th January 2021.
He was repatriated to the High Court at Calcutta on 8th November 2021 and has been functioning there since then. Justice Bagchi has served as a Judge of the High Court for more than 13 years. During his long tenure as a Judge of the High Court Justice Joymalya has acquired significant experience in diverse fields of law.
