6th edition of India Japan Maritime Exercise JIMEX 2022 held in Bay of Bengal: The sixth edition of Japan India Maritime Exercise JIMEX 2022 hosted by the Indian Navy commenced in the Bay of Bengal on 11 September 2022.

Exercise JIMEX 22 involves two Phases; exercises at sea and a harbour phase at Visakhapatnam.

India – Japan Maritime Exercise JIMEX 2022 will further enhance the cooperation and mutual confidence between the two navies and fortify the long-standing bond of friendship between the two countries.

India – Japan Maritime Bilateral Exercise JIMEX-22: Aims

India – Japan Maritime Bilateral Exercise, JIMEX-22 aims to develop common understanding of operational procedures and enhance inter-operability through conduct of a multitude of advanced exercises, across the entire spectrum of maritime operations. Multi-faceted tactical exercises involving weapon firings, cross-deck helicopter operations and complex surface, anti-submarine and air warfare drills will consolidate coordination developed by the two navies.

6th edition of India – Japan Maritime Exercise JIMEX-22: Key Highlights

The Indian Navy is being represented by three indigenously designed and built warships; Sahyadri, a multi-purpose stealth frigate and Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes Kadmatt and Kavaratti. Additionally, Guided Missile Destroyer Ranvijay, Fleet Tanker Jyoti, Offshore Patrol Vessel Sukanya, submarines, MIG 29K fighter aircraft, Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft and ship borne helicopters are also participating in the exercise JIMEX-22 in Bay of Bengal.

The Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) ships are being led by R Adm Hirata Toshiyuki, Commander Escort Flotilla Four, and Indian Naval ships by R Adm Sanjay Bhalla, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.

India Japan Maritime Exercise JIMEX: Background

This edition marks the 10th anniversary of JIMEX, which began in Japan in 2012. It also coincides with the 70th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. JIMEX 22 seeks to consolidate the high degree of interoperability that exists between maritime forces of the two countries, through complex exercises in the surface, sub-surface and air domains.
