1. Lok Sabha passes The Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2019
  • The Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2019 for consideration and passing in Lok Sabha.
  • The Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 was enacted to provide for the constitution of a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) and the Human Rights Courts for protection of human rights.
  • Parliament should come together to support Government’s step to make NHRC more inclusive and efficient, said Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai.

2. Commerce & Industry Minister to Launch GII on 24th July 2019
  • Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Railways, Piyush Goyal will launch the Global Innovation Index (GII) on 24th July, 2019 in New Delhi. Director General, World Intellectual Property Organization, Mr. Francis Gurry, will also be present during the event.
  • The GII operates with a theme every year to track global innovation. This year’s theme is “Evaluating the Medical Innovation Scenario of the Next Decade”. It aims to highlight the role and dynamics of medical innovation in order to understand how it can form the future of healthcare and the potential impact this may have on economic growth.

3. India's current account balance deficit grew to $68bn in 2018-19: IMF
  • According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), India's current account (CA) balance deficit grew to $68 billion in 2018-19 from $49 billion the previous year.
  • The External Sector Report of the IMF released by Chief Economist Gita Gopinath also found that India’s Net International Investment Position had slightly improved with the deficit coming down from $438 billion in 2017-18 to $431 billion in 2018-19.

4. 15th Finance Commission to visit Chhattisgarh
  • The 15th Finance Commission headed by Chairman, Shri N.K. Singh will visit the State of Chhattisgarh from 23rd July to 25th July, 2019.
  • Chhattisgarh, the Commission is scheduled to have meetings with the representatives of the State’s Panchayati Raj Institutions and Rural Local Bodies, representatives of the Urban Local Bodies and the representatives of the Political Parties of the State. The Commission will also have a meeting with the representatives of Trade and Industry bodies in the State.

5. Vivek Kumar appointed as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister
  • Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Vivek Kumar was appointed as private secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Vivek Kumar, IFS (2004) presently working as Director in the Prime Minister’s Office as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the post, on co-terminus basis or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

  • England's All-rounder Ben Stokes, has been nominated as New Zealander of the Year.

  • Indian star shuttler PV Sindhu beats Nozomi Okuhara to enter the semi-final of Indonesia Open, BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament in Jakarta.
