Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj passes away at 67

Former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj passed away. She was 67. The senior BJP leader suffered a cardiac arrest.

The 67-year-old BJP leader Swaraj had a kidney transplant in 2016 and had opted out of contesting Lok Sabha polls earlier this year for health reasons.

Swaraj who was the foreign minister 26 May, 2014 to 30 May, 2019, was the second woman to hold the office, after Indira Gandhi.

A seven-time Member of Parliament, she also served as MLA for three terms. She also served as 5th Chief Minister of Delhi from 13 October, 1998 to 3 December, 1998.

At the age of 25 in 1977, she became the youngest cabinet minister in Haryana. 

Swaraj had a tweet in the evening congratulating Prime Minister Modi following the move by the Center to grant special status to Jammu and Kashmir and the border state to get the approval of Parliament in the two union territories. "Narendra Modi - Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime," she said.
