1. Indian Navy conducted anti-hijacking exercise ‘Apharan’ off Kochi coast, Kerala
  • The Indian Navy (IN), in collaboration with Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Cochin Port Trust and all other concerned stakeholders, conducted 'Apharan' a large scale Anti Hijacking Exercise off the Port of Kochi on 18 Dec 19.
  • The Exercise code named 'Apharan' saw participation of multiple agencies, including more than 12 ships and helicopters of the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and Cochin Port Trust.
  • The Exercise ‘Apharan’ was aimed at streamlining the response mechanism/ preparedness to thwart any attempt by Anti-National Elements to hijack a merchant vessel or attempt forced entry of a rogue/commandeered merchant vessel into Kochi harbour.

4. Fitch cuts India’s FY-20 GDP growth forecast to 4.6 % from 5.6%
  • The American credit rating agency Fitch Ratings on Friday cut India’s GDP(Gross Domestic Product) growth forecast for fiscal year-FY 2019-2020 (or 2019) to 4.6 % from the earlier estimate of 5.6%, on deterioration in business and consumer confidence.

  • The Global Compact on Refugees provides a basis for host countries and communities to receive support that is timely, predictable, and sustainable. It enables host countries to tap into additional development cooperation, alongside, and as a complement to, ongoing humanitarian assistance.


7. HDFC Bank becomes 3rd Indian company to cross m-cap of $ 100 billion
  • India's largest private-sector lenders HDFC (Housing Development Finance Corporation) Bank Ltd, has become the 3rd company to cross market capitalization (m-cap) of $ 100 billion (over Rs 7 lakh crore) after Reliance Industries Ltd- RIL ($140.74 billion) & Tata Consultancy Services – TCS ($114.60 billion).
