1. India, AIIB sign MoU for USD 145 million to improve irrigation services and flood management in West Bengal: Highlights with Details
  • The Government of India, the Government of West Bengal and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoUs) loan agreement for a US$145 million project to improve irrigation services and flood management in the Damodar Valley Command Area (DVCA) in West Bengal.
  • The West Bengal Major Irrigation and Flood Management Project will benefit about 2.7 million farmers from five districts of West Bengal across 393,964 ha area with better irrigation services and improved protection against annual flooding to mitigate the impact of climate change.


2. Atma Nirbhar Bharat scheme to provide free food grains to migrant labour kicks off
  • Under Atma Nirbhar Bharat package, Government of India has decided that food grains will be provided free of cost at the rate of 5 Kg per month for two months i.e. May and June 2020, to about 8 Crore migrant labour who are not covered under NFSA or State scheme PDS cards.
  • The total estimated cost of about Rs. 3500 Crore for implementation of this scheme will be fully borne by Government of India. All India Allocation of food grains under this scheme is 8 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT).

  • Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare participated in the 32nd Commonwealth Health Ministers’ Meeting through Video Conference in New Delhi. The theme of the meeting was- Delivering a co-ordinated Commonwealth COVID-19 response.

  • In view of the unprecedented circumstances of Covid-19 Union Minister for HumanResource Development (HRD) Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank advised CBSE to provide an opportunity to all students, who have failed in 9th and 11th to take online/offline tests. Accordingly, CBSE has issued a notification regarding this.


5. FM Nirmala Sitharaman announce measures relief and credit support related to businesses, especially MSMEs to support Indian Economy’s fight against COVID-19: Highlights with Details
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a Special economic and comprehensive package of Rs 20 lakh crores - equivalent to 10% of India’s GDP. He gave a clarion call for Self-Reliant India Movement. He also outlined five pillars of Aatmanirbhar Bharat – Economy, Infrastructure, System, Vibrant Demography and Demand.
  • Union Minister of Finance & Corporate Affairs Smt. Nirmla Sitharaman today announced measures focused on Getting back to work i.e., enabling employees and employers, businesses, especially Micro Small and Medium Enterprises, to get back to production and workers back to gainful employment. Efforts to strengthen Non-Banking Finance Institutions (NBFCs), Housing Finance Companies (HFCs), Micro Finance Sector and Power Sector were also unfolded. Other than this, the tax relief to business, relief from contractual commitments to contractors in public procurement and compliance relief to real estate sector were also covered.


6. WTO Chief Roberto Azevedo decides to resign a year before his term expires
  • In an unprecedented move, the Head of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Roberto Azevedo has decided to resign, a year before his term expires. Mr Azevedo, a former diplomat from Brazil, said, he will step down on August 31st, cutting short a seven-year tenure marked in recent years.


7. Indian Railways operate 642 “Shramik Special” trains till 13th May, 2020 across the country
  • Subsequent to the Ministry of Home Affairs order regarding movement of migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons stranded at different places by special trains,Indian Railways had decided to operate “Shramik Special” trains. 
  • As on 13th May 2020, a total of 642 “Shramik Special” trains have been operationalized from various states across the country.


8. Gujarat CM announces Aatmanirbhar Gujarat Sahay Yojana
  • Gujarat, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced Aatmanirbhar Gujarat Sahay Yojana.
  • The scheme for small shop keepers and self-employed hit by the lockdown. Under the scheme, one lakh rupees collateral free loan will be given at two per cent for the beneficiaries for three years.


9. WPI food inflation declines in April to 3.60 per cent: Highlights with Details
  • Union Government released truncated data for April wholesale price-based inflation saying there was limited transaction of products in the market due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
  • As per the data released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry, Wholesale Price Index (WPI) deflation in primary articles was 0.79 per cent in April, as against an inflation of 3.72 per cent in March.
  • The fuel and power basket saw a deflation of 10.12 per cent in April, against 1.76 per cent deflation in the previous month.


10. HRD Minister Nishank interacts with the teachers across the country through webinar: Key Highlights with Details
  • Union Minister for Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' gave a message of 'Acharya Devo Bhava' while interacting with teachers across the country through webinar in New Delhi. The Minister expressed his gratitude to all the teachers for spreading awareness relating to COVID-19 among the students and society at large. A large number of teachers joined the webinar and also asked questions to the Union Minister.
  • The Union Minister made two big announcements during this webinar. In response to a question, he said that the examination date of NET will be announced very soon. He also announced that teachers who have completed the recruitment process of Navodaya Vidyalaya will get appointment after lockdown.


11. e-NAM reaches milestone of 1000 Mandis across 18 States, 3 UTs
  • The pan-India electronic agriculture trading portal, e-NAM has reached milestone of one thousand mandis across 18 states and three union territories.
  • Agriculture Ministry said, 38 additional Mandis were integrated with the e-NAM platform on Friday. The 38 new Mandis include 19 from Madhya Pradesh, 10 Mandis from Telangana, four from Maharashtra and one each in Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir.
