1. 6 Cities rated 5 Star, 65 Cities rated 3 Star and 70 Cities rated 1 Star rating of garbage free cities: Highlights with Details 
  • Hardeep S, Puri, Minister of State (I/C) for Housing and Urban Affairs, informed that for the assessment year 2019-2020, a total of six cities have been certified as 5-Star (Ambikapur, Rajkot, Surat, Mysuru, Indore and Navi Mumbai), 65 cities as 3-Star and 70 cities as 1-Star. While announcing the results of the Star Rating of Garbage Free Cities.
  • Minister Puri also launched the revised protocol for the Star Rating of Garbage Free Cities at the event. The Star Rating Protocol was launched by the Ministry in January 2018 to institutionalize a mechanism for cities to achieve Garbage Free status, and to motivate cities to achieve higher degrees of cleanliness.


2. India among 10 countries elected to WHO Executive Board: Key Highlights with Details 
  • India was among 10 nations that were elected by the 73rd World Health Assembly to the Executive Board of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for a period of three years.
  • The other new members include Botswana, Colombia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Oman, Republic of Korea, Russia, and the United Kingdom.


3. Central Govt notifies cut in EPF contribution to 10% for May, June, July: Highlights with Details
  • The Central Government has notified the reduction in statutory rate of contributions from 12 per cent to 10 per cent for wage months period from May to July, 2020 for all class of establishments covered under the Employees Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.
  • Earlier, the government had announced to reduce the rate as part of Atma-Nirbhar Bharat package. Ministry of Labour and Employment in a statement said that the notification in this regard is available on the home page of EPFO website. It said, reduction in rate of EPF contributions from 12 per cent to 10 percent of basic wages and Dearness allowances is intended to benefit both 4.3 Crore employees and employers of 6.5 lakhs establishments to tide over the immediate liquidity crisis to some extent.


4. Govinda Rajulu Chintala appointed as new Chairman of NABARD
  • Govinda Rajulu Chintala has been appointed as the new chairman of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), a Personnel Ministry order said. 
  • Chintala, at present, is working as the chief general manager (CGM) of the bank. He will hold the post till his superannuation on July 31, 2022, the order said.
  • Besides him, Shaji KV and P V S Suryakumar have been appointed deputy managing directors in the NABARD. Shaji is general manager of Canara Bank.


5. Renowned Marathi writer Ratnakar Matkari passes away at 81
  • Renowned Marathi dramatist, litterateur, theatre personality and National Award-winning director, Ratnakar Matkari passed away in Mumbai. He was 81.
  • He had tested COVID-19 positive four days ago and was undergoing treatment at the Seven Hills hospital.
  • Ratnakar Matkari has the honour of being decorated by both Sangeet Natak Akademi and Sahitya Akademi for his wide range of works. His film ‘Investment’ bagged the National Award in Regional Category section. 
  • His first play ‘Vedi Manasa’, written at the age of 17 years was broadcast for the first time on Mumbai Akashwani.


6. Railways to Introduce 200 Time-tabled Daily New Trains From June 1, Online Booking Soon
  • Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal said, Indian Railways plans to double the number of Shramik Trains to bring more relief to Migrants; In addition to these Shramik Special trains, Indian Railways is going to start 200 new Time Tabled trains from June 1, 2020; The routes and schedule of these trains will be intimated soon.
  • The booking will be only online and shall commence in few days. 
  • Trains will be non AC. No tickets will be sold at any railway station and prospective travellers should not come to the railway station to buy tickets.

7. Home Ministry asks states to coordinate with Railways to ferry stranded migrant workers to their homes
  • Union Home Secretary has asked states to proactively coordinate with the Railway Ministry to help ferry the stranded migrant workers to their native places. In a letter written to Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories, Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla has suggested measures to mitigate the distress of migrant workers in the country. He said, states should ensure arrangement of resting places with facilities of sanitation, food and health for all such workers who are on the move.


8. Union HRD Minister launches AI-powered mobile app for mock tests for JEE Main, NEET 2020
  • Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank launched a new mobile app called the ‘National Test Abhyas'. The App has been developed by NTA to enable candidates to take mock tests for upcoming exams such as JEE Main, NEET under the NTA’s purview. The app has been launched to facilitate candidates’ access to high quality mock tests in the safety and comfort of their homes since there was a demand for making up the loss to students due to closure of educational institutions and NTA’s Test-Practice Centers (TPCs) due to the continuing lockdown.


9. India records 0.2 COVID-19 deaths per lakh population as against global figure of 4.1: Health Ministry
  • The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said India had 0.2 deaths per lakh population against 4.1 deaths per lakh population for the world.
  • In a press statement, the Ministry said, "In terms of case mortality per lakh population, India has so far about 0.2 deaths vis-a-vis approximately 4.1 deaths for the world as a whole."
