India slips 7 spots to rank 101st among 116 countries: In the 2021 Global Hunger Index, India ranks 101st out of the 116 countries with sufficient data to calculate 2021 GHI scores. With a score of 27.5, India has a level of hunger that is serious. In 2020, India was ranked 94th out of 107 countries on the (GHI 2020) index.

According to the latest ranking of the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2021, the level of hunger in India is serious, which has increased more than last year. Due to this, India has also lagged far behind its neighboring countries like Bangladesh (76), Nepal (76) and Pakistan (92) in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2021. Which is very disappointing, now the time has come that the Government of India (GOI) should also pay attention to the works of public welfare by making a special policy on topics like hunger, unemployment etc. 

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) that is released by Concern Worldwide, an Irish aid agency and Welt Hunger Hilfe, a German organisation.

Four indicators were considered to calculate the global score to determine the ranking

  1. UNDERNOURISHMENT: the share of the population that is undernourished (that is, whose caloric intake is insufficient);
  2. CHILD WASTING: the share of children under the age of five who are wasted (that is, who have low weight for their height, reflecting acute undernutrition);
  3. CHILD STUNTING: the share of children under the age of five who are stunted (that is, who have low height for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition).
  4. CHILD MORTALITY: the mortality rate of children under the age of five.
