IAS Arun Goel appointed as new Election Commissioner 

The President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu has appointed Arun Goel as the new Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India (ECI). Arun Goel is a 1985 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) (Retd.) officer of Punjab cadre.

Key Highlights 

The post of 3rd Election Commissioner remained vacant after the then Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar took the charge of Chief Election Commissioner in May 2022.

PM Modi inaugurates Kashi Tamil Sangamam in Varanasi, UP  

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘Kashi Tamil Sangamam’ - a month-long programme being organised in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

Objective 

The objective of the programme is to celebrate, reaffirm and rediscover the age-old links between Tamil Nadu and Kashi – two of the country’s most important and ancient seats of learning. More than 2500 delegates from Tamil Nadu will be visiting Kashi. During the programme, the Prime Minister also released a book ‘Tirukkural’ along with its translation into 13 languages. He also witnessed a cultural programme followed by aarti.


PM Modi inaugurates first greenfield airport Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh 

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar and dedicated 600 MW Kameng Hydro Power Station to the nation.

The foundation stone for Donyi Polo Airport was laid by Prime Minister Modi in February 2019. Work on the airport has been completed within a short span of time, despite the challenges due to the pandemic in between

About Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar 

The name of the airport reflects the traditions and rich cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh and its age-old indigenous reverence for the Sun (‘Donyi’) and the Moon (‘Polo’).

The airport, which is the first greenfield airport in Arunachal Pradesh, has been developed in an area of over 690 acres, at a cost of more than Rs. 640 crores. With a 2300 m runway, the airport is suitable for all weather day operations. The airport terminal is a modern building, which promotes energy efficiency, renewable energy and the recycling of resources.

The development of a new Airport in Itanagar will not only improve connectivity in the region but will also act as a catalyst for the growth of trade and tourism, thus providing a boost to the economic development of the region.

Airports in five northeastern states, namely, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland have seen flights take off for the first time in 75 years.

About 600 MW Kameng Hydro Power Station

Developed at a cost of more than Rs 8450 crore and in an area spread over more than 80 kilometres in West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh, the project will make Arunachal Pradesh a power surplus state, also benefiting the National Grid in terms of grid stability and integration. This project will contribute in a major way towards the fulfilment of the country’s commitment to increase the adoption of green energy.


Winter Session of Parliament to commence from December 7 

The Winter Session of Parliament will commence from 7th of December and continue till 29th December. The session will have 17 sittings spread over 23 days.


Manika Batra bags bronze medal in Asian Cup Table Tennis tournament 2022

Indian table tennis player Manika Batra bagged the bronze medal at the ongoing ITTF-ATTU Asian Cup tournament at Huamark Indoor Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

She defeated World number six and three-time Asian champion Hina Hayata by 4-2 to win the bronze medal. Manika Batra becomes first Indian woman to win a medal in Asian Cup Table Tennis
tournament.
