India takes over as Council Chair of Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) 

India assumed the Chair of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) from France, an international initiative to support responsible and human-centric development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This comes close on the heels of India taking over the presidency of G20, a league of world’s largest economies at Bali, Indonesia.

Key Highlights 

The Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrasekhar represented India virtually at the GPAI meeting held in Tokyo for the symbolic takeover from France, which is the outgoing Council Chair.

AI is expected to add USD $967 Bn to Indian economy by 2035 and USD 450–500 billion to India’s GDP by 2025, accounting for 10% of the country’s USD 5 trillion GDP target.

GPAI is a congregation of 25 member countries, including the US, the UK, EU, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, and Singapore.

Background 

India had in 2020 joined the group as a founding member. It is a first-of-its-type initiative for evolving better understanding of challenges and opportunities around AI. It works in collaboration with partners and international organisations, leading experts from industry, civil society, governments, and academia to collaborate to promote responsible evolution of AI and guide the responsible development and use of AI, grounded in human rights, inclusion, diversity, innovation, and economic growth.

In a historic election, Prof. Venu Gopal Achanta, Director, CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL), New Delhi, has been elected as a member of the prestigious International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM).

UGC to implement 4-year UG programme framework in higher education institutions from 2023-24 

University Grants Commission, UGC has finalised the framework for the four-year undergraduate programme that will be implemented in all higher education institutions from the upcoming academic session 2023-24.

The Four Year Undergraduate programme will be implemented in all the 45 Central Universities and most of the state and private universities from the next academic session.

ATP Finals 2022: Novak Djokovic win his sixth ATP Finals title

Novak Djokovic has defeated Norway's Casper Ruud to win his sixth ATP Finals title tennis tournament in Turin, Italy. Djokovic defeated Rudd in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the season-ending title.

This was Djokovic's sixth ATP Finals title and the one that matches Roger Federer’s record.
