Election Commission announced polls in Karnataka on May 10; Counting on May 13  

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that voting for the Karnataka Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on 10 May. The counting of votes will be held on 13th May. The term of the 224-member Karnataka Assembly will end on May 24.

As per the Election Commission, the gazetted notification will be issued on 13th April. The last date of filing nominations is the 20th of April. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on 21st April, whereas the last date of withdrawal of candidature is 24th of April.


India-Russia Working Group on Roads and Intelligent Transport Systems meeting held in New Delhi 

The 1st meeting of the India-Russia Working Group on Roads and Intelligent Transport Systems was held in New Delhi.

India, Russia meeting: Background  

The working group was established under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation on Bilateral Cooperation in the Road Transport and Road Industry in September 2021, to establish a long-term and effective bilateral relationship of communication and cooperation in the road transportation, logistics, Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and green mobility sector.


2nd edition of India - Africa Joint Military Exercise AFINDEX held in Pune 

2nd edition of India - Africa Joint Military Exercise AFINDEX-23: The 2nd edition of joint military exercise 'The Africa-India Field Training Exercise (AFINDEX-2023)' culminated at Foreign Training Node, Aundh, Pune.

The Exercise AFINDEX-2023 was held from 16 to 29 Mar 2023.

India - Africa Joint Military Exercise AFINDEX-23: Participate by 

A total of 25 nations of the African continent with 124 participants and Indian troops from the SIKH, MARATHA and MAHAR Regiments participated in the multinational exercise AFINDEX 2023.

MoD sign two contracts with BEL for procurement of Automated Air Defence Control 

The Ministry of Defence, on March 29, 2023, signed three contracts – two with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Ghaziabad and one with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) – at a total cost nearly Rs 5,400 crore, to bolster the defence capabilities of the country.

The first contract with BEL pertains to procurement of Automated Air Defence Control & Reporting System ‘Project Akashteer’ worth Rs 1,982 crore for the Indian Army.

The second contract with BEL relates to acquisition of Sarang Electronic Support Measure (ESM) systems along with associated Engineering Support Package from BEL, Hyderabad at an overall cost of Rs 412 crore for the Indian Navy.

About Project Akashteer

The Automated Air Defence Control & Reporting System ‘Project Akashteer’ will empower the Air Defence units of the Indian Army with an indigenous, state-of-the-art capability, to effectively operate in an integrated manner. Akashteer will enable monitoring of low level airspace over the battle areas of the Indian Army and effectively control the Ground Based Air Defence Weapon Systems.

About Sarang systems 

Sarang is an advanced Electronic Support Measure system for helicopters of the Indian Navy, designed and developed indigenously by Defence Electronics Research Laboratory, Hyderabad under programme Samudrika. The scheme will generate an employment of approximately two lakh man-days over a period of three years.


Indian Coast Guard Conducts Regional Search And Rescue (SAR) Exercise in Kakinada 

The Indian Coast Guard conducted Regional Search and Rescue exercise during 28 -29 March 2023 at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.

Aims 

The aim of the exercise was to simulate a real time maritime distress scenario and highlight the functioning of Search and Rescue (SAR) organisation for a mass rescue operation. The exercise involved all stakeholders with effective use of available resources towards M-SAR (Maritime Search and Rescue) contingency efficiently.


VP Dhankhar appoints Renu Cheema Vig as the Vice Chancellor of Panjab University  

The Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who is also the Chancellor, Panjab University appointed Prof. (Dr.) Renu Cheema Vig, presently the Dean of University Instruction (DUI), as the Vice Chancellor of Panjab University

Exercising the powers conferred by Section 10 of the Panjab University Act 1947, Shri Dhankhar made the appointment of Prof. Vig for a term of three years.

The Second G20 Sherpas meeting under India’s G20 Presidency, chaired by India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant will be held in Kumarakom, Kerala, from March 30 to April 2, 2023.

The four-day gathering of over 120 delegates from G20 Members, 9 invitee countries, and various international and regional organizations will hold multilateral discussions on G20’s economic and developmental priorities as well as on addressing contemporary global challenges. The deliberations will focus both on policy approaches and concrete implementation.


First G20 Chief Science Advisers Roundtable held in Ramnagar, UK 

The First G20 Chief Science Advisers Roundtable (G20-CSAR) meeting was held in Ramnagar, Uttarakhand, which witnessed intense discussion on issues of transboundary S&T issues of mutual interest. Indian Railways completes 100% electrification of rail network in Haryana

Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone, by completing 100% electrification of the Railway network in Haryana State. The existing Broad Gauge network of Haryana is 1,701 Route kilometre, which is now 100% electrified, resulting in saving on account of reduced line haul cost (about 2.5 times lower), heavier haulage capacity, increased sectional capacity, reduced operating & maintenance cost of electric loco, energy efficient and eco-friendly mode of transportation with reduced dependence on imported crude oil, saving of foreign exchange. Further, new Broad Gauge network shall be sanctioned along with electrification, in sync with Railways’ policy of 100% electrified network.

Haryana state’s territory falls in Northern, North Central & North Western Railway’s jurisdiction. Some of the major railway stations in Haryana are: Ambala, Panipat, Gurgaon, Kurukshetra, Hisar Junction, Rewari Junction, Rohtak Junction, and Bhiwani.
