DRDO, Indian Navy Conduct Successful Trial of BMD Interceptor 

DRDO, Indian Navy Conduct Successful Trial of BMD Interceptor: Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy successfully conducted a maiden flight trial of sea-based endo-atmospheric interceptor missile off the coast of Odisha in the Bay of Bengal. 

DRDO, Indian Navy Trial of BMD Interceptor: Key Highlights  

The purpose of the trial was to engage and neutralize a hostile ballistic missile threat thereby elevating India into the elite club of Nations having Naval BMD Interceptor capability.

ISRO successfully launches PSLV-C55 mission carrying two Singaporean satellites  

Indian Space Research Organisations (ISRO) successfully launched the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle C55 (PSLV-C55) mission carrying two Singaporean satellites from Satish Dhawan Space Center at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

PSLV-C55 is a dedicated commercial PSLV mission of NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), which is the commercial arm of ISRO, for an international satellite customer.


India's forex reserves rise $1.65 billion to $586.4 billion 

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India's forex reserves increased by $1.65 billion to $586.41 billion in the week ended April 14, 2023. The total reserves increased by $6.306 billion to $584.755 billion in the previous week.


India reaches 38th spot on World Bank's Logistics Performance Index 

India has reached the 38th spot on World Bank's Logistics Performance Index. In 2014, India was ranked 54th. It climbed 16 places from 2014 to 2022.


Senior Advocate K Subba Rao passes away at 92 

Senior advocate K Subba Rao, a noted lawyer who specialises in labour rights, passed away in Bengaluru. He was 92.

K Subba Rao's achievements in the legal field were widely acknowledged, and he was selected to represent India at the International Law Conference held in New York in 1986.


Asia-Pacific Leaders’ Conclave on Malaria Elimination to be held in New Delhi 

As a precursor to World Malaria Day, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Government of India will be organizing the Asia Pacific Leaders’ Conclave on Malaria Elimination in New Delhi on April 24, 2023, in partnership with the Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA).

Aims 

The Asia Pacific Leaders Conclave on Malaria Elimination aims to reaffirm political commitment to galvanise action for malaria elimination by 2030.

Key Highlights 

The Conclave will provide a platform for leaders from the Asia Pacific region to discuss ongoing efforts towards malaria elimination and revitalise national and regional momentum towards the goal of an Asia Pacific Free from Malaria by 2030.

Among the 11 countries that are part of the World Health Organization's 'High Burden to High Impact' initiative, only India has reported a decline in malaria cases during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Malaria cases and deaths also dropped by 85.1% and 83.6% respectively, from 2015 to 2022.


Bengaluru hosts Conference to help Cities Mainstream Climate Action 

National and International partners came together in Bengaluru to discuss “Mainstreaming Climate Action in Cities”, in an effort to shape G20 priorities and develop next steps for accelerating climate action in India and beyond.

Three of the six current U20 priority areas (accelerating climate finance, ensuring water security, and encouraging environmentally responsive behavior), were the matter of contention.

Urban 20 is a city diplomacy initiative that brings together cities from G20 member states under a common framework to discuss global economic, climate and development issues.

The cities form a common position and issue recommendations for consideration by the G20 presidency and heads of state, enhancing the role of cities as global economic and political leaders.

The U20 initiative is permanently convened by C40 Cities and United Cities and Local Governments, under the leadership of a chair city that changes each year. Prior U20 cycles were chaired by Buenos Aires and Paris (2018), Tokyo (2019), Riyadh (2020), Rome and Milan (2021) as well as Jakarta and West Java (2022).


UGC asks universities to allow students to write exams in local languages 

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to allow university students to write examinations in local languages even if the program is being offered in English medium.

The decision has been taken to support the teaching-learning process in local languages.

Ace Indian archer Jyothi Surekha won her second gold medal in the women's individual compound event at the Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 1 in Antalya, Turkey.

Jyothi Surekha Vennam defeated Sara Lopez of Columbia 149-146 to won the gold.
