World Press Freedom Index 2023: India ranks 161 out of 180 countries     

As per the 21st edition of its World Press Freedom Index 2023 released by the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) India has slipped to the 161st rank in terms of press freedom out of 180 countries ranked, a while 11 ranks worse than 2022, when it stood at 150.

Neighbouring countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have surpassed India ranking 152, 150 and 135 respectively.

Norway, Ireland and Denmark occupied the top three positions in press freedom index 2023, while Vietnam, China and North Korea ranked in the bottom three.


RBI imposes ₹2 lakh penalty on Ambarnath Jaihind Co-operative Bank  

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹2.00 lakh (Rupees two lakh only) on Ambarnath Jaihind Co-operative Bank Limited Ambarnath (Maharashtra) for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on ‘Know Your Customers’.


RBI imposes ₹1 lakh penalty on Suvarnayug Sahakari Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1.00 lakh (Rupees One lakh only) on Suvarnayug Sahakari Bank Limited Pune for contravention of directions issued by RBI on Maintenance of Deposit Accounts.


Niranjana from Chennai crowned Miss Koovagam 

K Niranjana, a transgender from Chennai, was crowned Miss Koovagam at a pageant held in Villupuram in connection with the annual Koothandavar festival.

M Disha (24) was the runner up and K Sadhana was the second runner up. The winners were felicitated by the seniors of South Indian Transgender Association.

World Bank to provide $2.25 billion to Bangladesh to support development projects 

The World Bank (WB) will provide USD 2.25 billion to Bangladesh to support projects related to growth, regional connectivity and disaster preparedness.

The agreement was signed in Washington to celebrate 50 years of partnership between the World Bank and Bangladesh. The financial agreement includes support for five projects in Bangladesh.


Manipur University to host the Y20 Seminar on May 4 

Manipur University will host the Y20 Seminar on May 4, 2023, on "Shared Future: Youth in Democracy and Governance", one of the five themes of the Y20 India Summit.

Key Highlights 

The seminar will focus on youth to make the G20 summit participative, cutting across all ranks. The Government of India aims to reach out to all 16 districts of Manipur through this seminar.

The University will host around 550 participants – 26 foreign panellists and delegates, 38 delegates and panellists from outside Manipur and 69 within Manipur. About 70 students from colleges affiliated with Manipur University will participate in the seminar.


Vantika Agrawal becomes 11th Indian women to achieve International Master title in Chess 

Vantika Agrawal is the new India Women No.3 in Chess and the 11th Indian women to achieve the International Master title.

Vantika Agrawal became the women's champion at the Menorca Open last month in Spain. She has also won a bronze medal in the National Women's Championship held in Kohlapur in January 2023 and a gold medal for the Airport Authority of India in February 2023.


ISSF Shotgun World Cup 2023: Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Ganemat Sekhon win Gold 

Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Ganemat Sekhon, combined effectively to give India their first medal, a Gold in the ongoing ISSF World Cup 2023 Shotgun in Cairo, Egypt.

The Indian mixed doubles pair defeated Mexicans Luis Raul Gallardo Oliveros and Gabriela Rodriguez 6-0 in the skeet mixed team event in Egypt.


ICC rankings 2023: India surpasses Australia to become No.1 Test team

As per the latest Test rankings released by the International Cricket Council (ICC), India surpassed Australia to become the number one Test team.

India is currently at the top with 121 points, and Australia is second place with 116 points. England (116 points), South Africa (104) and New Zealand (100) occupy third, fourth and fifth spots respectively.

India will face Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final on June 7 at the Oval in London.
