RBI imposes Rs 1.73 crore penalty on HSBC Bank 

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1,73,75,000/- (Rupees one crore seventy three lakh and seventy five thousand only) on the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) for violating the Credit Information Companies Rules.

As per the RBI press release, HSBC furnished incorrect credit information in respect of a number of expired credit cards with nil dues to all four credit information companies.


India-Bangladesh Border Haat inaugurates at Bholaganj in Sylhet 

A new border-haat between India and Bangladesh was inaugurated in Bholaganj under Companiganj upazila of Sylhet.

India-Bangladesh Border Haat: Key Highlights

The border haat will function between 10 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon on Wednesdays and Saturdays. A total of 26 Indian stalls and 24 Bangladeshi stalls are allowed to operate in the haat.

People living within 5 km of the border can use this haat for which a special card is issued to allow entry. Items sold at the haat are duty free. This is the fourth border-haat in Sylhet division out of which three are currently functional.


MoHUA and MoR jointly ink MoU with JICA for Project SMART 

The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and Ministry of Railways jointly signed an MoU with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for ‘Station Area Development along Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail’ (Project-SMART).

Project-SMART: Key Highlights 

Speed Railway (MAHSR) Stations to enhance accessibility and convenience of commuters & other stakeholders and to promote economic activities in the vicinity of station areas.

The project would facilitate and enhance institutional capacity of State Governments, Municipal Corporations and Urban Development Authorities to plan, develop and manage surrounding areas of MAHSR stations.

The MoU was inked for four High Speed Rail Stations- Sabarmati, Surat in Gujarat and Virar and Thane in Maharashtra; out of 12 stations in-route. Surat, Virar and Thane are Green fields while Sabarmati is a Brown field development.


Govt launches Phase-III of Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana 

Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare launched the third phase of Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY) of the Health Ministry which is being supported by Coal India Limited as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to commemorate World Thalassemia Day. She also launched the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana Portal.

Background  

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that causes a body to have less hemoglobin than normal. The Union Health Ministry has been implementing the TBSY since 2017 under the National Health Mission (NHM) and had recently completed its second phase in March 2023.

The Coal India CSR-funded Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) program is a unique initiative aimed at providing a one-time cure opportunity to underprivileged Thalassemia patients who have a matched sibling donor but do not have the financial resources to cover the cost of the procedure. The program has successfully completed 356 bone marrow transplants for Thalassemia patients across 10 empanelled hospitals in India during the two phases.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Indian Air Force (IAF) Heritage Centre in Chandigarh.

The Centre, an embodiment of IAF’s rich history and legacy, houses a collection of artefacts, murals and 3D dioramas, showcasing the evolution of the force since its inception. It displays the heroic deeds of the IAF and the country’s technological progress in aircraft/equipment.


Indian Railways records Monthly freight loading of 126.46 MT for April 2023 

Indian Railways (IR) has recorded Monthly freight loading of 126.46 MT in April 2023. The incremental loading in the month of April has been 4.25 MT i.e. a growth of 3.5% over the April figures achieved in 2022. Freight revenue in April is Rs 13,893 Cr. as compared to Rs 13,011 in April 2022, a growth of 7%.

Indian Railways has achieved a loading of 62.39 MT in Coal in April 2023 as compared to 58.35 MT in April 2022, followed by 14.49 MT in Iron ore, 12.60MT in Cement, 9.03 MT in Balance other goods, 6.74 MT Containers, 5.64 MT Steel, 5.11 MT Food grains, 4.05 MT Mineral Oil and 3.90 MT in Fertilizers.


Piyush Goyal visit Canada for 6th India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue 

Union Minister of Commerce Piyush Goyal along with Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade Government of Canada, was co-chair the discussions for the sixth India- Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment (MDTI) in Ottawa.

IAF MIG-21 crashes in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh

A MIG 21 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed on a house in Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan, unfortunately leading to the loss of three lives. 

The IAF regrets the loss of lives and offers its deepest condolences to the bereaved families. A Court of Inquiry has been constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident.
