The Central Government has appointed IAS K Sanjay Murthy as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office. Murthy, a 1989 batch IAS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre, will replace Girish Chandra Murmu, whose tenure ends on November 20. Murthy is currently serving as the Higher Education Secretary in the Ministry of Education.

K Sanjay Murthy CAG
President Droupadi Murmu has appointed IAS K Sanjay Murthy as the next Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). He will replace Girish Chandra Murmu, who will retire on November 20, 2024.

Murmu, a 1985-batch IAS officer, was appointed as CAG in August 2020 after serving as the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir after the formation of the new Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He had succeeded Rajiv Mehrishi.
Currently, Murthy is serving as the Higher Education Secretary in the Ministry of Education.
About IAS K Sanjay Murthy CAG
K Sanjay Murthy holds a bachelor's degree in engineering. Murthy is a 1989 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre.
From 2002 to 2007 he worked in the Central Government in the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Ministry of Communications and IT. He also served at the National Institute for Smart Government (NISG), Hyderabad for three years

After this, he took over the post of MD of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation and worked with the state government in the field of primary education, higher education and technical education.
He also served as Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Housing and Urban Development in Government of Himachal Pradesh. IAS Murthy was appointed as Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in 2014.
Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG)
The Comptroller and Auditor General of India is commonly known as 'CAG'. Article 148 of the Indian Constitution provides for 'CAG', which examines the income and expenditure of the departments of the Central and State Governments and the institutions controlled by them.
Appointment of Comptroller and Auditor General
The Comptroller and Auditor General is appointed by the President of India. But he can be removed from the post only on the request of both the houses of the Parliament.
Tenure of Comptroller and Auditor General
The tenure of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) will be six years from the date on which he assumes office, but if he attains the age of 65 years before that, he retires from his post. After retirement, he cannot hold any post under the Government of India.
