NHAI Signs Agreement with ICICI Bank to Implement India’s First Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling System

To provide seamless and barrier-free tolling experience to National Highway users the National Highways Authority of India or NHAI has signed an agreement with ICICI Bank, to implement country’s first comprehensive Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at Choryasi Fee Plaza in Gujarat on NH-48. The signing of the contract agreement marks a major step towards barrier-free tolling, enabling seamless Electronic Toll Collection through FASTag. Choryasi Fee Plaza in Gujarat will serve as the first barrier-free toll plaza in the country. In addition, an agreement was also signed with ICICI Bank for the implementation of Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) at Gharaunda Fee Plaza in Haryana on NH-44.

NHAI Signs Agreement with ICICI Bank to Implement India’s First Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling System in Gujarat

To provide seamless and barrier-free tolling experience to National Highway users the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by NHAI has signed an agreement with ICICI Bank, to implement country’s first comprehensive Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at Choryasi Fee Plaza in Gujarat on NH-48.

In addition, an agreement was also signed with ICICI Bank for the implementation of MLFF at Gharaunda Fee Plaza in Haryana on NH-44. NHAI is planning to roll out Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) based tolling at around 25 National Highway fee plazas during the current financial year. The process of identifying such fee plazas for implementation is presently underway.

The NHAI and ICICI Bank agreement to Implement India’s First Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling System was signed in presence of NHAI Chairman Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav and senior officials from NHAI, IHMCL and ICICI Bank at NHAI Headquarters in New Delhi.

India’s First Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) Tolling System in Gujarat

What is a Multi Lane Free Flow Tolling System?

The Multi Lane Free Flow Tolling System is a barrier-less tolling system that enables transactions through reading of FASTag and Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) by High performance RFID Readers and ANPR Cameras.

It enables seamless toll collection without stopping vehicles at fee plazas, reducing congestion and travel time leading to enhanced fuel efficiency and lowering emissions.

Implementation of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) Tolling System will also contribute towards improving toll revenue collection and creating a smarter, faster and more efficient National Highway network across the country.

About National Highways Authority of India 

The National Highways Authority of India or NHAI is an autonomous agency of the Government of India was set up in 1995 (by an act of the Parliament, NHAI Act, 1988) and is responsible for management of a road network. NHAI is a nodal agency of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

It has been entrusted with National Highways Development Project, which alongwith other minor projects, has vested in it 50329 kms of National Highways for development, maintenance and management.

Objective of NHAI 

The Objective of NHAI is to ensure that all contract awards and procurements conform to the best industry practices with regard to transparency of process, adoption of bid criteria to ensure healthy competition in award of contracts, implementation of projects conform to best quality requirements and the highway system is maintained to ensure best user comfort and convenience.

The total length of NH (including expressways) in the country at present is 1,32,499 kms. While Highways/Expressways constitute only about 1.7% of the length of all roads, they carry about 40% of the road traffic.

Vision of NHAI

The vision of NHAI is to meet the Nation’s need for provision and maintenance of National Highways network to global standards and to meet the user’s expectations in the most time-bound and cost-effective manner, within the strategic policy framework set by the Government of India and thus promote economic well-being and quality of life of the people.

Mission of NHAI

The missions of NHAI are given below.

  • To develop, maintain and manage National Highways vested in it by the Government.
  • To collect fees on National Highways, regulate and control the plying of vehicles on National Highways for its proper management.
  • To develop and provide consultancy and construction services in India and abroad and carry on research activities in relation to the development, maintenance and management of highways or any other facilities there at.
  • To advise the Central Government on matters relating to highways.
  • To assist on such terms and conditions as may be mutually agreed upon, any State Government in the formulation and implementation of schemes for highway development.
