President Droupadi Murmu Appoints Justice M. Sundar As Chief Justice of Manipur High Court

President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice M. Sundar, Judge of the Madras High Court as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office. Justice M. Sundar replaces Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, the current Chief Justice of Manipur High Court, who retires on September 14, 2025. Recently, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai recommended the name of Justice Sundar as the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.

Justice M. Sundar Appointed As Chief Justice of Manipur High Court

Justice M. Sundar, Judge of the Madras High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.

Justice M. Sundar replaces Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, the current Chief Justice of Manipur High Court, who retires on September 14, 2025.

Recently, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai recommended the name of Justice M. Sundar, Judge of Madras High Court as the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.

According to the press release - In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, the President is pleased to appoint Justice M. Sundar, Judge, Madras High Court as Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office, consequent upon the superannuation of Shri Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, present Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur on 14.09.25.

About Justice M. Sundar

Justice M.Sundar was born on 19th July, 1966 in Chennai, he graduated in Law from the Madras Law College, belongs to the first batch of 5 years integrated Law Course and

Justice Sundar enrolled as an Advocate in 1989. He practiced primarily in the Madras High Court and had a wide spectrum of practice on the Civil Side.

Justice M.Sundar was sworn in as permanent Judge of the Madras High Court on 5th October 2016.

About High Court of Manipur

On re-organization of the North-Eastern region by the North Eastern Area (Re-organization) Act, 1971, a common High Court was established for the five North-Eastern States namely; Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura and the two Union Territories namely Union Territory of Mizoram and the Union Territory of Arunachal Pradesh and called as the Gauhati High Court. Thereafter, when Manipur attained Statehood, the Imphal Bench of the Gauhati High Court came into existence on the 21st day of January 1972.

In exercise of the power conferred by Sub-section (2) of Section 31 of the North Eastern Areas (Re-organisation) Act, 1971 the President of India was pleased to establish the Permanent Bench of the Gauhati High Court at Imphal, vide Gauhati High Court (Establishment of Permanent Bench at Imphal) order dated 21st January, 1992. The Chief Justice of India, Justice M. H. Kania inaugurated the Permanent Bench at Imphal on 14th March, 1992.

On 30th April, 2006, the Foundation Stone for the new building of the High Court at Mantripukhri, was laid by Justice Y.K.Sabharwal, the then Chief Justice of India the newly constructed High Court Building at Mantripukhri was inaugurated by Dr. Manmohan Singh Prime Minister of India and Smt.Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson, UPA on 3rd December, 2011.

Later, functioning of the Imphal Permanent Bench at the new Complex was inaugurated on 7th April, 2012, by Justice Altamas Kabir, Seniormost Judge of the Supreme Court of India.

On 16th day of May, 2012, Parliament passed a bill amending the North Eastern Areas Re-organisation Act, 2012 and the same received the accent of the President of India on Monday, the 4th day of June, 2013. Vide this amendment Act the High Court of Manipur was to come into existence on the date to be determined and notified by the Central Government.

Accordingly, the High Court of Manipur came into existence on 23rd March, 2013.

On 23rd March, 2013 Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre was administered oath of office as the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur by Gurbachan Jagat, the Governor of Manipur at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan at Imphal and on the same day, his Lordship assumed the charge of office of Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur. Later on the same Justice N.Kotiswar Singh was also administered oath of office of Puisne Judge of the High Court of Manipur in Court No.1 by the Chief Justice and assumed the charge of office.

On 25th March, 2013, the High Court of Manipur at Imphal was formally inaugurated by Justice Altamas Kabir, the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
