5th Kalvari class submarine VAGIR to be commissioned into Indian Navy on 23 Jan 2023  

Indian Navy is set to commission the fifth Kalvari class submarine Vagir on 23 Jan 2023, Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff will be the Chief Guest for the ceremony.

The Kalvari class submarine Vagir are being built in India by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France. Four of the Kalvari class of submarines have already been commissioned into the Indian Navy.

Kalvari class submarine VAGIR: Background

The erstwhile Vagir was commissioned on 01 Nov 1973 and undertook numerous operational missions including deterrent patrols. The submarine was decommissioned on 07 Jan 2001 after serving the nation for about three decades.

Launched and named ‘Vagir’ on 12 November 2000, the submarine in its new avatar has the distinction of having the lowest build time among all indigenously manufactured submarines till date.

Sanduk Ruit wins Bahrain's ISA Award for Service to Humanity 

Himalayan Cataract Project Co-Founder Dr Sanduk Ruit has won the ISA Award for Service to Humanity, a top civilian award of Bahrain.

The award carries a cash prize of USD 1 million, a certificate of merit and a gold medal. Dr Ruit from Nepal is a pioneer in delivering high-quality microsurgical procedures in remote eye camps.

Sanduk Ruit made modern eye care affordable and accessible to countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. He is fondly called as "God of Sight" to have saved 1,20,000 eyesight who would have otherwise gone blind in absence of treatment.

Dr Sanduk Ruit is the recipient of the Padma Shri Award by the Government of India, The National Order of Merit of Bhutan as well as the Ramon Magsaysay Award.


B20 inception meeting to be held in Gandhinagar 

As part of India’s G20 presidency, a Business-20 (B20) inception meeting will be held at Gandhinagar in Gujarat from 22nd to 24th January 2023.

The meeting will be held to formulate policy recommendations to be submitted to G-20 ahead of the leaders' Summit. More than 150 policy-makers, business executives, CEOs, and senior executives representing enterprises from G-20 countries will take part in the inaugural meeting.

India produces record over 5,000 Lakh Metric Tons of sugarcane in sugar season 2021-22 

India has produced a record over 5,000 Lakh Metric Tons (LMT) of sugarcane in the sugar season 2021-22.

During the season, record more than 5000 Lakh Metric Tons (LMT) sugarcane was produced in the country out of which about 3574 LMT of sugarcane was crushed by sugar mills to produce about 394 Lakh MT of sugar (Sucrose) out of which 36 lakh MT sugar was diverted to ethanol production and 359 LMT sugar was produced by sugar mills.

India has emerged as the world’s largest producer and consumer of sugar as well as the world’s 2nd largest exporter of sugar after Brazil, in Sugar Season (Oct-Sep) 2021-22.


India Post to use RoPax Ferry Services for speedy postal services between Saurashtra, South Gujarat and Mumbai 

After successful trial for a month through RoPax Ferry services on the Gogha Hazira route in the state of Gujarat, the most popular postal system in the world, ‘India Post’ to continue its postal and package delivery services for speedy and economical dispatch on daily basis.

India Post to use RoPax Ferry Services: Key Highlights 

The service will not only bring down the delivery transportation time of about 10-12 hours to 3-4 hours but will also enable swift movements of industrial packages between Saurashtra and South Gujarat & Mumbai regions.

The service is estimated to carry daily postal cargo of about 3 to 4 tons during upcoming months.

RoPax service between Hazira and Gogha: Background

The RoPax service between Hazira and Gogha inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2020 is receiving overwhelming public response and has transported more than 3.7 lakh passengers and 1.1 lakh vehicles (car, bus, truck) till December 2022 since inauguration.

The projects include dedicating to the nation Mumbai Metro Rail Lines 2A & 7, laying the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and seven sewage treatment plants, inaugurating 20 Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Dawakhana, and starting road concretisation project for around 400 kilometres of roads in Mumbai.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and dedicated various developmental projects related to irrigation, drinking water and a National Highway development project in Kodekal, Yadgir, Karnataka.

The projects include laying the foundation stone of the Yadgir multi-village drinking water supply scheme under the Jal Jeevan Mission and 65.5 km section ( from Badadal to Maradagi S Andola) of Surat - Chennai Expressway NH-150C, and inauguration of the Narayanpur Left Bank Canal – Extension Renovation and Modernisation Project (NLBC – ERM).
