12th Session of India-Spain Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation held in New Delhi  

The 12th Session of India and Spain Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation (JCEC) was held in New Delhi on 13th April, 2023.

Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal, and Ms. Xiana Mendez, Secretary of State for Trade, Government of Spain co-chaired the 12th Session of India-Spain Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation (JCEC).

Key Highlights 

Both sides celebrated this Golden Jubilee edition of India-Spain Joint Commission mechanism which was established in 1972. During the past 50 years, a remarkable enhancement of bilateral trade and investment has taken place. With an investment of USD 3.7 Bn, 250 Spanish Companies are active in India and 40 Indian Companies are present in Spain working in different sectors such as IT, Pharma, Renewable Energy, Automobiles, Infrastructure etc.

Both sides also agreed for further cooperation in the field of Renewable Energy, Shipping, Ports, Tourism, Infrastructure, Food Processing, Pharmaceuticals, Technology, Innovation, and Defence sector.

The status of various MOUs were also reviewed including those of important interest for bilateral relations such as MOUs on Migration and Mobility, Agreement on Social Security, Cyber Security etc.

India and Spain are looking forward to a considerable progress in the ongoing India-EU FTA Negotiations during the upcoming Spanish Presidency of EU from July to December, 2023.


International Conference on Defence Finance & Economics held in New Delhi 

The three-day International Conference on Defence Finance and Economics (ICDFE-2023) was held in New Delhi on April 14, 2023. Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari was the Chief Guest at the valedictory session of the conference.

Delegates from USA, UK, Japan, Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Kenya attended the conference, across eight business sessions.


EAM S Jaishankar inaugurates Buzi Bridge in Mozambique built by India 

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar virtually inaugurated the Buzi Bridge, constructed as part of 132 km Tica-Buzi-Nova-Sofala Road project.  The bridge has been by built by India.

The External Affairs Minister took a ride in a Made in India train from Maputo to Machava with Mozambican Minister of Transport and Communication and Chairman, Mozambican Port and Rail Authority Mateus Magala.


MoS External Affairs Meenakashi Lekhi to visit Croatia and Slovenia 

Union Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakashi Lekhi will be on a four day visit to Croatia and Slovenia from 15th April 2023. The visit will further strengthen the momentum in India's relations with these countries.


Second G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) 2023 

The second meeting of G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) under the Indian G20 Presidency was held on 12-13 April 2023, on the margins of the 2023 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group. 

Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, and Governor, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Shaktikanta Das jointly chaired the meeting.

Key Highlights  

The meeting saw participation of around 350 delegates from G20 members, 13 invitee countries, and various international and regional organisations.

The meeting was organised in three sessions covering the Global Economy, International Financial Architecture, Sustainable Finance, Financial Sector, Financial Inclusion, and International Taxation.

The progress achieved during the 2nd G20 FMCBG meeting will inform the discussions during the 3rd G20 FMCBG meeting which will be held in July 2023 in Gandhinagar, India, and subsequently the Leaders’ Summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 8-9, 2023.


SCO Millets Food Festival begins in Mumbai 

Union Minister of State for Tourism Shripad Naik inaugurated a Millets Food Festival of the member countries of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai.

The public can savour a variety of cuisines made of different millets prepared by chefs from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan Uzbekistan, Russia and India for lunch and dinner at Shamiana Restaurant at the hotel till April 19.

The seven-day festival is being organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, at Hotel Taj Mahal Palace to commemorate the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023). The food festival features various organic meals made with millets that have been hand-selected by the SCO Member Chefs.


India, Japan and France announce common platform for Sri Lanka creditors 

India, Japan and France have announced a common platform for talks among bilateral creditors to coordinate restructuring of Sri Lanka's debt. The move is expected to serve as a model for solving the debt woes of middle-income economies.

As per the official data from Sri Lankan government, Sri Lanka owes 7.1 billion dollar to bilateral creditors, with 3 billion dollar owed to China, followed by 2.4 billion dollar to the Paris Club and 1.6 billion dollar to India.


NHAI Enables FASTag Based Payments at Forest Entry Points 

To facilitate seamless and efficient entry process for vehicles entering into the forest area, Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) a company incorporated by NHAI to carry out Electronic Tolling, inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve spread across the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The initiative aims to provide FASTag based payment system at Forest entry points and will extend the benefit of collection of Ecosystem Management Coordination (EMC) fee via FASTag at various entrance points of the Tiger reserve.

Background

The FASTag system employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to enable automatic toll payments at toll plazas and affixation of FASTag on all 4-wheelers & above vehicles have been mandated across India. By enabling FASTag - based payments at forest entry points, visitors can avoid long queues and delays, allowing them to savor the natural beauty and wildlife of these areas without any hassles.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao unveils the 125-feet tall bronze statue of Baba Saheb Dr BR Ambedkar on the banks of the historic Hussain Sagar Lake.

CM K Chandrasekhar Rao announced the award at a public meeting held after unveiling the 125-feet tall bronze statue of Dr B R Ambedkar on the banks of the historic Hussain Sagar Lake.


PM Modi inaugurates & lays foundation stone various projects in Guwahati, Assam  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation various projects worth more than Rs. 10,900 crores at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati, Assam.

The projects include laying the foundation stone of a bridge connecting Palashbari and Sualkuchi on the Brahmaputra river, a project for the beautification of Rang Ghar in Sivasagar, the inauguration of a 500 TPD Menthol Plant in Namrup and dedicating to the nation five railway projects. The Prime Minister also witnessed a colourful Bihu programme performed by more than ten thousand Bihu dancers.

PM Modi also dedicated AIIMS Guwahati and three other medical colleges to the nation. He also laid the foundation stone of Assam Advanced Health Care Innovation Institute (AAHII) and launched ‘Aapke Dwar Ayushman’ campaign by distributing Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) cards to eligible beneficiaries.


Aman Sehrawat clinches gold medal at Asian Wrestling Championships 2023

Aman Sehrawat clinched India’s first gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 in Astana, Kazakhstan. Sehrawat topped the podium in the men's 57kg freestyle category. He defeated Kyrgyzstan's Almaz Smanbekov 9-4 to win the gold medal.
