Lt Gen DS Rana takes over as 23rd Colonel of the Regiment of Garhwal Rifles

Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana has taken over as the 23rd Colonel of the Regiment of Garhwal Rifles. Lt Gen DS Rana succeeds Vice Chief of the Army Staff Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani as new Colonel of the Regiment of Garhwal Rifles. The ceremonial handing over of the Baton took place at the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre in Lansdowne, Uttarakhand, amidst full military honours.

Lt Gen DS Rana Appointed As New Colonel of the Regiment of Garhwal Rifles

Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana has been appointed as the new Colonel of the Regiment of Garhwal Rifles. With this, Lt Gen DS Rana has taken over as the 23rd Colonel of the Regiment of Garhwal Rifles.

Lieutenant Gen DS Rana succeeds Vice Chief of the Army Staff Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani.

Lt Gen DS Rana took over the appointment of 23rd Colonel of the Regiment of Garhwal Rifles at Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre in Lansdowne, Uttarakhand with effect from 28th June 2025.

The ceremonial handing over of the Baton took place at the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre in Lansdowne, Uttarakhand, amidst full military honours.

As part of the proceedings, Lt Gen DS Rana received the Guard of Honour and paid homage at the War Memorial, honouring the supreme sacrifice of the bravehearts of the regiment.

During his tenure as Colonel of the Regiment of Garhwal Rifles, Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani provided exemplary leadership and strengthened the regimental bond, upholding the highest standards of professionalism and camaraderie that define the Garhwal Rifles.

About Lt Gen DS Rana

Lt Gen Rana was commissioned into the 10th Battalion of The Garhwal Rifles on December 19, 1987 and later had the honour of commanding the same battalion.

Currently, Lt Gen Rana is serving as the 18th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN).

Prior to taking over as Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN), General Officer Dinesh Singh Rana served as Director General, Defence Intelligence Agency, making history as the first Chief of Defence Intelligence to be elevated to the rank of Commander-in-Chief — a reflection of the growing importance of defence intelligence and jointmanship in India's military leadership.

In a career spanning over 37 years, General Officer Dinesh Singh Rana has held diverse operational, instructional, and staff appointments across various terrains and theatres. His service includes tenures with the Indian Military Training Team and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. He has commanded an Infantry Brigade and Division in the Eastern Sector and subsequently led the Gajraj Corps along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Lt Gen Rana has also served as an instructor at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun; College of Defence Management, Secunderabad; and the Higher Command Wing, Army War College, Mhow. His staff appointments include Brigade Major of an Independent Armoured Brigade, Deputy Director General Staff Duties, Brigadier Military Intelligence (East), Provost Marshal, and Director General Staff Duties at Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Army).

Educational Life of Lt Gen Rana

Lt Gen Rana is a graduate from the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla and a post-graduate from the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He is also an alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi; National Centre for Defence Studies, Madrid, Spain; and the National Defence University, USA.

Awards And Honoured

For his distinguished service, Lt Gen Dinesh Singh Rana has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Yudh Seva Medal (YSM), Sena Medal (SM), and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card. As a young officer, he earned the Sena Medal and Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Commendation for gallantry in Kashmir. He also holds a Ph.D. in China’s defence modernisation.
