India Post Payments Bank launches WhatsApp Banking Services  

India Post Payments Bank launches WhatsApp Banking Services: India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), in collaboration with Airtel, announced the launch of WhatsApp Banking Services for IPPB customers in New Delhi enabling them to access banking services on their mobile phone.

Govt authorizes SBI to issue and encash Electoral Bonds 

Govt authorizes SBI to issue and encash Electoral Bonds: The Union Government has authorised the State Bank of India for issue and encash Electoral Bonds through its 29 Authorised Branches upto 12th April 2023.

Electoral Bonds to be valid for fifteen calendar days 

According to the Ministry of Finance, the Electoral Bonds shall be valid for fifteen calendar days from the date of issue and no payment shall be made to any payee Political Party if the Electoral Bond is deposited after expiry of the validity period. The Electoral Bond deposited by an eligible Political Party in its account shall be credited on the same day.

Govt authorizes SBI to issue and cash Electoral Bonds 

State Bank of India (SBI), in the XXVI Phase of sale, has been authorised to issue and encash Electoral Bonds through its 29 Authorized Branches (as per list enclosed) w.e.f. 03.04.2023 to 12.04.2023.

A person being an individual can buy Electoral Bonds, either singly or jointly with other individuals.

What are Electoral Bonds? 

An electoral bond is a bond on which its value is written like that of a currency note. It can be used to make donations to political parties on behalf of individuals, institutions and organizations.

Electoral bonds can be bought in multiples of Rs 1000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 1 lakh.


India, Philippines 4th Joint Defence Cooperation Committee meeting held in New Delhi 

4th Joint Defence Cooperation Committee meeting between India and the Philippines was held in New Delhi.

India and Philippinesreviewed the ongoing bilateral defence cooperation and discussed effective and practical initiatives to further expand the engagements. The co-chairs reaffirmed their commitment to implement 2006 agreement concerning defence cooperation, based on mutual trust and understanding, common interest and shared values of democracy and rule of law.

Both sides agreed to initiate measures to enhance cooperation in the Defence Industry and Technology domain and look forward to greater synergy in effectively deepening bilateral cooperative engagements across the spectrum. 

They discussed cooperation in multilateral forums and noted complementarities in their approaches to the Indo-Pacific region and decided to hold regular consultations on issues of mutual interest. The interest and enthusiasm towards strengthening the bilateral relations across sectors were appreciated.


UK signs deal to join trade pact with 11 Asia and Pacific nations 

The United Kingdom has signed a deal to join a trade pact with 11 Asia and Pacific nations, three years after it officially left the European Union.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership ( CPTPP) was established in 2018, and includes Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.


2nd G20 Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) meeting to be held in Gandhinagar 

The second G20 Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) meeting under India’s G20 Presidency will be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, from 2-4 April 2023.

Over 100 delegates representing G20 member countries, special invitee countries and International Organizations will engage in detailed deliberations on the priority areas.


Agriculture exports register over 6% rise for April 2022 to January 2023 

Agriculture exports have registered over six per cent rise during April, 2022 to January, 2023 over the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

The agricultural exports during this period was over 43 billion dollars. Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel said this in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha.


Health Minister lays Foundation Stone of new block of 500 bedded Doon Hospital in Dehradun 

Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya laid foundation stone of the new block of 500 bedded hospital in the Doon medical college Dehradun and three 50 bedded Critical Care blocks in Shrinagar, Rudraprayag, and Nainital medical colleges virtually from Joshimath.

More than 40 thousand Amrit Sarovars have been constructed in the country so far. This feat has been achieved within a short span of 11 months since the launch of the Mission Amrit Sarovar in April last year. A target has been set to construct 50 thousand Amrit Sarovars by 15th August this year under the Mission.


Govt launches Sagar Setu Mobile App of National Logistics Portal Marine  

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal launched the App Version of National Logistics Portal (Marine) ‘Sagar-Setu’.

The Sagar-Setu app has been envisaged with deliverables covering features like Login Module, Service Catalogue, Common Application Format, Letter of Credit, Bank Guarantee, Certification, and Track & Trace etc. 

It will provide real-time information of activities that are generally not in reach of the importer, exporter, and customs broker including vessel-related information, gate, container freight stations and transactions on fingertips. It also enables digital transactions for payments required for the clearance process of import and export like container freight station charges, shipping line charges, transportation charges, etc.


MoD sign contracts for improved Akash Weapon System

The Ministry of Defence signed contracts for procurement of improved Akash Weapon System and 12 Weapon Locating Radars, WLR Swathi (Plains) for the Indian Army at an overall cost of over Rs 9,100 crore.

Akash Weapon System 

The contract for procurement of improved Akash Weapon System (AWS) for 3rd & 4th Regiments of Army Air Defence, comprising live Missiles & Launchers with upgrades, Ground Support Equipment, Vehicles and Infrastructure was signed with Bharat Dynamics Limited, worth over Rs 8,160 crore.

The AWS is a Short Range Surface to Air Missile (SRSAM) Air Defence System, indigenously designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). In order to meet aerial threats, two additional Regiments of AWS with Upgradation are being procured for Indian Army for the Northern borders. Improved AWS has Seeker Technology, Reduced Foot Print, 360° Engagement Capability and improved environmental parameters.

Weapon Locating Radars Swathi (Plains) 

The contract for WLR Swathi (Plains) was signed with Bharat Electronic Limited (BEL) at a cost of over Rs 990 crore. It is an indigenously designed WLR which is capable of locating guns, mortars and rockets firing its own troops, thereby facilitating their destruction through Counter Bombardment by their own firepower resources. 

This will enable troops to carry out their operational tasks without any interference from the enemy and also provide them safety against enemy fire. Induction is planned to be completed in 24 months.


MoD inks contract with BrahMos Aerospace for Next Generation Maritime Mobile Coastal Batteries 

Ministry of Defence inked a contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) for procurement of Next Generation Maritime Mobile Coastal Batteries (Long range) {NGMMCB (LR)} and BrahMos Missiles at an approximate cost of over Rs 1,700 crore under Buy (Indian) Category. 

The delivery of NGMMCBs is scheduled to commence from 2027. These systems will be equipped with supersonic BrahMos Missiles and will significantly enhance multi-directional maritime strike capability of the Indian Navy.

BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) 

The BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) is a Joint Venture between India and Russia making a crucial contribution to augment the new generation Surface-to-Surface missile with enhanced ranges. 

This contract is going to give further boost to indigenous production of critical weapon systems and ammunition with active participation of indigenous industries. This project will generate an employment of more than 90,000 man-days over a period of four years.


MoD signs contracts with Indian shipyards for acquisition of 11 NG Offshore Patrol Vessels

The Ministry of Defence signed contracts with Indian shipyards for acquisition of 11 Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels and six Next Generation Missile Vessels at an overall cost of approx. Rs 19,600 crore.

Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels 

The contract for acquisition of 11 Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category was signed with Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata at a total cost of Rs 9,781 crore. Of the 11 ships, seven will be indigenously designed, developed & manufactured by GSL and four by GRSE. The delivery of the ships is scheduled to commence from September 2026.

Next Generation Missile Vessels

The contract for acquisition of six Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV) was signed with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) at a cost of Rs 9,805 crore. The delivery of ships is scheduled to commence from March 2027. 

The NGMVs would be heavily armed war vessels incorporating stealth, high speed and offensive capability. The primary role of the ships would be to provide offensive capability against enemy warships, merchantmen and land targets.
