Union Cabinet reshuffle: Arjun Ram Meghwal appointed as new Law Minister 

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Culture Arjun Ram Meghwal has been given the charge of Law Ministry in addition to his existing portfolios.

Meghwal replaces Union Minister Kiren Rijiju who has now been given the responsibility of the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

President Droupadi Murmu has given permission to reshuffle the ministries on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the press release the charge of the Ministry of Earth Sciences has been given to Kiren Rijiju. While Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Culture Arjun Ram Meghwal was assigned the independent charge as Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice in addition to his existing portfolios.....Read More

MoS S.P. Singh Baghel moved from Law Ministry to Health Ministry

According to the Rashtrapati Bhavan communique, President Droupadi Murmu as advised by the Prime Minister has allocated the portfolio.

Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel has been assigned as Minister of State in the Health and Family Welfare Ministry. Baghel was serving as Minister of State in the Law and Justice Ministry.

Siddaramaiah to be next CM of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar Deputy CM  

Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah will be the next chief minister of Karnataka and DK Shivkumar will be his deputy. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2023.

DK Shivakumar will also take oath with him, who will be the Deputy Chief Minister in this government.

PM Modi to embark on three-nation tour on 19th May 2023 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a three-nation tour of Japan, Papua New Guinea, and Australia on 19th May 2023 morning.

Key Highlights 

On the first leg of his tour, PM Modi will attend the G7 Summit in Japan at the invitation of  Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

On the second leg of his visit, Prime Minister Modi will reach Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea on 21st May. PM Modi will jointly host the third Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation with his Papua New Guinea counterpart James Marape.

On the third leg of his visit, PM Modi will travel to Sydney in Australia on 22nd May. He will hold a bilateral meeting with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese on 24th May 2023.

Second G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRWG) meeting to be held in Mumbai from 23-25 May 

Second G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRWG) meeting will be held in Mumbai from 23rd to 25th May 2023 and the five key priority areas that will be taken up for discussions in this meeting are early warning, resilient infrastructure, national and international response, building back better and nature-based solutions.

The first DRRWG meeting was held in Gandhinagar in March-April this year. This initiative of India to include Disaster Risk Reduction in the G-20 is a part of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 to 2030 (Sendai Framework). This was the first major agreement that provided Member-States with a concrete action plan to protect development gains from the Risk of Disaster.

Amazon Web Services to invest $12.7 billion in India 

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will invest USD 12.7 billion (around Rs. 1.05 lakh crore) by 2030 on cloud related infrastructure in India. The company is making this investment to meet the growing demand of customers in cloud services.

Amazon Web Services is a subsidiary of Amazon, which provides cloud computing platforms on demand to individuals, companies and governments. The company has invested $3.7 billion (around Rs. 30,900 crore) from 2016 to 2022.

The Amazon Web Services cloud platform offers more than 200 services, including storage, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

CCI approves merger of Credit Suisse Group AG with UBS Group AG 

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approves the proposed merger of Credit Suisse Group AG with UBS Group AG.

UBS Group AG (UBS) 

The UBS Group AG (UBS) is a multinational investment bank and financial services company founded and based in Switzerland, and active globally. UBS’ businesses comprise wealth management, asset management, investment banking services, and retail and corporate banking. In India, UBS’ business is primarily focused on brokerage services.

Credit Suisse Group AG

Credit Suisse Group AG (Credit Suisse) is a multinational investment bank and financial services company founded and based in Switzerland. Credit Suisse is active globally and its businesses comprise wealth management, asset management, investment banking services, and retail and corporate banking. In India, Credit Suisse’s businesses comprise wealth management and investment banking services.

The proposed combination entails UBS’s proposed acquisition of Credit Suisse by way of an absorption merger with UBS being the surviving legal entity (Proposed Combination).

Ambala BJP MP Rattan Lal Kataria passes away at 71 

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Ambala, Rattan Lal Kataria, passed away after a prolonged illness. He was 71. Rattan Lal represented Ambala in Lok Sabha for 3 terms. 

Rattan Lal Kataria served as the Union Minister of State in the Ministries of Jal Shakti and Social Justice and Empowerment from May 2019 to July 2021. 

Meghalaya CM & Bangladesh High Commissioner discuss trade and connectivity 

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, in a conversation with Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Mustafizur Rahman, emphasised on further strengthening India-Bangladesh trade ties and increasing connectivity.

CM Sangma also discussed the possibility of importing garments, plastic products, electronic products, processed food and frozen food from Bangladesh.

On the other hand, Bangladesh High Commissioner Mustafizur Rahman said that investors from Meghalaya have ample opportunities to invest in various sectors in Bangladesh.

South Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship 2023 concluded in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. Over 100 athletes and officials from six countries Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Nepal participated in Championship.
