India's Forex Reserves hit one-year high, almost touch $600 billion   

India's foreign exchange reserves continue to rise and now stand one step closer to the USD 600 billion threshold, as they reached a nearly one-year high.

Key Highlights   

Latest available data for the week ending May 12 showed that India's Forex Reserves registered a notable increase of $3.553 billion, reaching a total of $599.529 billion, as reported by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

According to RBI data, in the preceding week too, the reserves had witnessed a rise of $7.196 billion, touching the $595.976 billion mark.


RBI imposes ₹1 lakh penalty on Krishna Sahakari Bank 

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1.00 lakh (Rupees One lakh only) on Krishna Sahakari Bank Limited Satara for contravention of directions issued by RBI on Maintenance of Deposit Accounts.

Background

The statutory inspection of the bank conducted by RBI with reference to its financial position as on March 31, 2022, and examination of the Risk Assessment Report and all related correspondence pertaining to the same, revealed, inter alia, that the bank was collecting fixed penal charge for shortfall in maintenance of minimum balance in saving bank accounts, instead of proportionate to the extent of shortfall, without giving notice to the effect that in the event of minimum balance not being restored in the account within a month from the date of notice, penal charges will be applicable.


RBI imposes ₹1 lakh penalty on The National Cooperative Bank 

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1.00 lakh (Rupees One lakh only) on The National Cooperative Bank Limited Mumbai for contravention of directions issued by RBI on Maintenance of Deposit Accounts.


Banks to start accepting ₹2,000 notes in exchange from today 

Banks across the country will start accepting 2,000 notes for exchange from today.

In a circular issued the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed banks to maintain data on a daily basis on the amount of 2000 rupees notes exchanged and the amount that has been deposited into accounts.


Aadhaar authentication clocks 1.96 billion transactions in April 2023 

Aadhaar holders executed 1.96 billion authentication transactions in April 2023, a jump of more than 19.3 per cent over April 2022, indicating the growth of digital economy and usage of Aadhaar in India.

Key Highlights  

A majority of these authentication transaction numbers were carried out by using fingerprint. It is followed by demographic and OTP based authentications. Face authentication too is witnessing a good usage across sectors for easy service delivery.

The Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) is enabling financial inclusion for those at the bottom of the income pyramid. In April 2023, more than 200.6 million last mile banking transactions were made possible through AePS and the network of micro ATMs.


India-US launches Working Group on Education and Skill Development 

The Ministry of Education, Government of India and US Department of State launched the India-US Working Group on Education and Skill Development in virtual mode, with the aim to enhance cooperation and collaboration between the two countries in the field of education and skill development.

The establishment of the India-US Working Group on Education and Skill Development was announced by the leaders on the sidelines of the 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue held between India and US in Washington DC on 11.04.2022.


Govt to provide 30% financial support for promotion of Green Shipping  

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has announced that the Centre will provide 30 percent financial support for promotion of Green Shipping.


HM Amit Shah inaugurates Janganana Bhavan in New Delhi

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah inaugurated Janganana Bhavan in New Delhi. Amit Shah also launched the web-portal for birth and death registration, the upgraded SRS mobile application for geofencing, and the web-portal for online sale of census publications.

The Union Home Minister also released the Treatise on Indian Censuses since 1981.


Neeraj Chopra creates history, becomes World No.1 in men's javelin rankings 

India's golden boy and Olympics medalist Neeraj Chopra attained the world No. 1 ranking in the men's javelin throw event. This is the best ranking of his career.

With a total of 1455 points, Neeraj became the new No. 1 javelin thrower by overtaking the defending world champion Andersen Peters of Granada, who was second with 1433 points.

Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic is third with 1416 points.


Golden Grand Prix 2023: Indian athlete Shaili Singh wins bronze medal 

Indian athlete Shaili Singh won a bronze medal at the Golden Grand Prix 2023 athletics meet in the women's long jump event in Yokohama, Japan. Shaili Singh won the bronze medal by jumping 6.65 metres.

Germany’s Maryse Luzolo won the gold medal with a jump of 6.79m, while Brooke Buschkuehl of Australia won the silver medal with a jump of 6.77m.


Italian Open 2023: Daniil Medvedev wins Rome Title

World number three tennis star Daniil Medvedev clinched his maiden clay court title after beating Holger Rune in the Italian Open final. In the men's singles final, the Russian Daniil Medvedev beat the 20-year-old Danish Holger Rune 7-5, 7-5.

This is Medvedev's fifth title of 2023 and victory has lifted him above Novak Djokovic to the second spot in the world rankings.
