Indian Railways hands over 20 Broad Gauge Locomotives to Bangladesh    

To further strengthen bilateral relationship, 20 Broad Gauge (BG) locomotives were virtually flagged off to Bangladesh in a handing over ceremony held at Rail Bhavan New Delhi.

Key Highlights    

The handing over of these diesel locomotives, under grant assistance from the Government of India, fulfils an important commitment made during the visit of Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina to India, in October, 2019. In keeping with the requirements of Bangladesh Railway, the locomotives have been suitably modified by the Indian side. These locomotives will help handle the increasing volume of passenger and freight train operations in Bangladesh.

To enhance people to people contact, presently three pairs of passenger trains between India and Bangladesh, namely, Kolkata-Dhaka Maitree Express, Kolkata-Khulna Bandhan Express and New Jalpaiguri- Dhaka Mitali Express are running.


4th National Water Awards to be Conferred On 17th June, 2023 

The Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti will be organizing the Award Distribution Ceremony for the 4th National Water Awards on 17th June, 2023 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

41 winners, including joint winners, have been selected for the 4th National Water Awards, 2022, covering 11 categories including ‘Best State’, ‘Best District’, ‘Best Village Panchayat’, ‘Best Urban Local Body’, ‘Best School’, ‘Best Media’, ‘Best Institution for campus usage’, ‘Best water user association’, ‘Best Industry’, ‘Best Industry for CSR activities’, and ‘Best NGO’. The award winners in different categories will be given a citation, trophy and cash prize. 

The cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rank winners are Rs.2 lakhs, Rs.1.5 lakhs, and Rs.1 lakh, respectively.

Background 

The first edition of the National Water Awards was introduced by the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation in 2018 and 82 winners across 14 categories were awarded on 25 February, 2019 in New Delhi. 

Thereafter, the 2nd National Water Awards were announced in 2019 and 98 winners under 16 categories were felicitated by the Vice President of India on 11-12 November, 2020. The 3rd National Water Awards distribution ceremony was organised on 29th March 2022 and 57 winners under 11 categories were felicitated with awards by the President of India. 

The 4th National Water Awards will now be conferred on 17th June, 2023 at Vigyan Bhawan where 41 winners across 11 categories will be awarded.

Background  

Established in 1991 and held biennially, Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) is one of the largest maritime & aerospace exhibitions in the Asia-Pacific. This year’s edition involves over 600 exhibitors from more than 30 countries, including India.


International Conference on Chemicals and Petrochemicals held in New Delhi 

The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals is organising a B20 conference for the global business community, in collaboration with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with focus on the Chemicals & Petrochemical sector at New Delhi today.

Participate by 

More than 500 delegates from India and Overseas from Industry/Association/Federation across B20 Nations, Government representatives will participate in the conference. Industry representatives from Germany, Mexico, Russia, Hungary, United States of America, Belgium, Singapore, United Arab Emirates and South Korea are expected to participate in the conference.

Aims

The aim of the Conference is to improve the safety and sustainable ecosystem for chemicals and petrochemicals industry across the four pillars of De-carbonization, Circular Economy, Biodiversity and Water Conservation. The conference is an effort to promote sustainable development in chemical and petrochemical sector and to deliberate upon sustainable solutions of various issues being faced by the industry.


RRR movie actor Ray Stevenson passes away at 58 

Actor Ray Stevenson has passed away. He was 58. Stevenson played the role of British Governor Scott Buxton in SS Rajamouli's RRR film.

He was best known for roles in the Thor films and the Divergent series, as well as several UK TV shows such as Band of Gold, Peak Practice and Murphy's Law.


RBI imposes ₹2 lakh penalty on Srestha Finvest 

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹2.00 lakh (Rupees Two lakh only) on M/s Srestha Finvest Limited, Chennai, Tamil Nadu for non-compliance with directions issued by RBI with respect to requirement of obtaining prior approval from RBI in cases of acquisition/ transfer of control of Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) as applicable to Non-Banking Financial Company - Non-Systemically Important Non-Deposit taking Company.


President Droupadi Murmu to Visit Jharkhand from May 24 to 26 

The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu will visit Jharkhand from May 24 to 26, 2023. On May 24, 2023, the President will inaugurate the new building of the High Court of Jharkhand at Ranchi.

On May 25, 2023, the President will grace a Women Conference organised by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs at Khunti. She will also grace the 2nd convocation of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Ranchi at Namkum, Ranchi. She will attend a civic reception to be hosted in her honour by the Government of Jharkhand at Raj Bhavan, Ranchi.


ISSF World Cup 2023: Ganemat Sekhon wins silver medal, Darshna Rathore clinches bronze 

Indian shooters Ganemat Sekhon and Darshna Rathore have won silver and bronze medals in the women's individual skeet event at the ISSF World Cup Shotgun Almaty 2023.

Ganemat Sekhon won the silver medal with 50/60 points. Assem Orynbay, an Asian championships silver medallist from Kazakhstan also shot 50/60 but won the shoot-off 2–1 to take the gold medal.

Darshna Rathore won her first ISSF World Cup medal, a bronze. He has won this medal on the basis of 39/50.


Archery World Cup 2023: India finishes second in medals tally with 3 medals

India finished second in the medal tally with 3 medals in the compound section in the Archery World Cup Stage 2 at Shanghai.

India won all three medals in the compound category, with Prathamesh Jawkar winning the individual gold and Avneet Kaur the bronze. Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam won the mixed team gold.
