Vivek Joshi Appointed As New Election Commissioner
President Droupadi Murmu has appointed former IAS Dr. Vivek Joshi as the new Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India (ECI). Joshi is a 1989 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Haryana cadre.

Vivek Joshi took over the appointment of new Election Commissioner of India at New Delhi with effect from 19th February 2025.
The appointment of Vivek Joshi as Election Commissioner of India has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

About Vivek Joshi New Election Commissioner
Prior to this appointment, IAS Vivek Joshi has served as the Chief Secretary, Government of Haryana and Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training and Department of Financial Services in the Government of India.
Joshi served as Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India and Member Secretary of the Fifth State Finance Commission in the state of Haryana.

Vivek Joshi is a Mechanical Engineer from IIT Roorkee and has a Masters in International. Business from IIFT, New Delhi and M.A. & Ph.D in International Economics from the Graduate Institute, Geneva (Switzerland).
Election Commission of India
The Election Commission of India is an autonomous constitutional authority responsible for administering Union and State election processes in India. The body administers elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies in India, and the offices of the President and Vice President in the country.
The Election Commission was established in accordance with the Constitution on 25th January 1950.
Originally the commission had only a Chief Election Commissioner. It currently consists of Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners.
Appointment & Tenure Of Election Commissioners
The President appoints Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners. They have tenure of six years, or up to the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
