The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Indranil Bhattacharyya as the new Executive Director (ED) with effect from March 19, 2025. Before being appointed as RBI Executive Director, Bhattacharya was working as an advisor in the monetary policy department of the bank. As Executive Director of RBI, Bhattacharyya will look after the Department of Economic and Policy Research.

Indranil Bhattacharyya Appointed As New Executive Director of RBI
Indranil Bhattacharyya has been appointed as the new Executive Director (ED) of Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Prior to his promotion as Executive Director of RBI, Bhattacharyya was serving as Adviser in the Monetary Policy Department of the Bank.

Indranil Bhattacharyya took over the appointment of new Executive Director (ED) of RBI at Mumbai with effect from 19th March 2025.
About Indranil Bhattacharyya, Executive Director of RBI
Over a span of nearly three decades, Indranil Bhattacharyya has worked in the areas of monetary policy, fiscal policy, banking, and international economic relations in the Monetary Policy Department, Department of Economic and Policy Research and the International Department of the Reserve Bank.
Bhattacharyya has also served as an Economic Expert in the Technical Office of the Governor at Qatar Central Bank, Doha, Qatar for 5 years (2009-14).
Role and Responsibilities of RBI ED
As RBI executive director, Bhattacharyya will look after the Department of Economic and Policy Research.
Indranil Bhattacharyya: Educational Life
Indranil Bhattacharyya has a Postgraduate degree in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His research interests are primarily in monetary theory and policy, financial markets, market microstructure and fiscal policy.
Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
The Reserve Bank of India was established on April 1, 1935 according to the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The headquarters of the Reserve Bank was initially established in Kolkata but was permanently moved to Mumbai in 1937.

Initially the bank was privately owned, but since nationalization in 1949 it is fully owned by the Government of India.

The current Governor of the Reserve Bank of India is Sanjay Malhotra. He replaced Shaktikanta Das as the governor.
