Govt to raise Women's Marriage age from 18 to 21: The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of increasing the marriage age for women from 18 years to 21 years.
Current age for marriage in India
As of present time in India, the minimum age of marriage for men is 21 years while for women it is 18 years.
Background
It was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address in August 2020 that the government would soon reconsider the age of marriage for women. The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal after 1 year of announcement.
Task Force and its recommendations
In the month of June 2020, the government had constituted a task force under the leadership of Jaya Jaitley to re-examine the right age of marriage for girls. The task force had submitted its report on the proposal to increase marriage age for girls from 18 years to 21 years in December 2020.

The task force recommended that a girl should be 21 years of age at the time of giving birth to the first child. The resolution of the task force has described the age of marriage as an important step for the economic, social and health of women, children and society.

With this proposal approved, the government will bring amendments to the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act to give shape to the new proposal.
