Justice DY Chandrachud appointed as 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI): President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI).

Justice Chandrachud's appointment will come into effect from 9th November. He will succeed present Chief Justice of India Justice Uday Umesh Lalit. Justice DY Chandrachud will be the 50th Chief Justice of India.

Justice DY Chandrachud appointed as new Chief Justice of India (CJI): Background

President of India Droupadi Murmu has signed on 17th October, 2022, the Warrant for appointment of Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud as the next Chief Justice of India and the notification of his appointment has accordingly been issued by the Department of Justice, Government of India. Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud will take over as the 50th Chief Justice of India on 09th November 2022.

About new CJI Justice DY Chandrachud 

Born on November 11, 1959, Justice DY Chandrachud was enrolled as an Advocate on July 20, 1982. Justice Chandrachud joined the Bombay Bar after obtaining a LLM and SJD from Harvard Law School.

Justice DY Chandrachud has been previously the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and a former Judge of the Bombay High Court. He was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on May 13, 2016.

Justice DY Chandrachud is a Guest Lecturer at Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, Australian National University and University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. He has been invited to several organizations as a speaker, including the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights, the World Bank, United Nations Environmental Program, Asian Development Bank and the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts.

Justice DY Chandrachud, in his six years at the Supreme Court so far, has delivered several seminal judgments including the decriminalization of homosexuality, decriminalization of adultery, declaration of privacy as a fundamental right and combating caste and gender discrimination through the Indian Constitution. His judgments, including his notable dissents, have enriched Indian jurisprudence on constitutional law, human rights law, gender justice, criminal law and labour law. His vision for a just and equitable society precedes his days at the bench. As an advocate practicing predominantly at the Bombay Bar, he was a champion for several causes, including the right to privacy, the rights of HIV+ workers, religious and linguistic minority rights.

As the current Chairperson of the E-committee, Supreme Court of India, Justice Chandrachud is spearheading a digital transition of the judicial system in India, with an aim of ensuring access, transparency and accountability. The e-committee is providing services such as e-filing of cases, virtual Courts, and a National Judicial Data Grid in furtherance of the principle of open Courts. 

Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant (DY) Chandrachud is due to retire on November 10, 2024.
