President Droupadi confers National Florence Nightingale Awards 2021   

President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu today presented the National Florence Nightingale Awards for the year 2021 to the nursing professionals at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The National Florence Nightingale Awards were instituted in the year 1973 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India as a mark of recognition for the meritorious services rendered by the nurses and nursing professionals to the society.


SC upholds 10% reservation for EWS in admissions and govt jobs

The Supreme Court of India upholds 10% reservation for economically weaker sections (EWS) in admissions and government jobs.

Key Highlights  

A majority of a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court today upheld the validity of the 103rd Amendment of the Constitution which provides 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in admissions and government jobs.

Three judges (Justices Dinesh Maheshwari, Bela Trivedi, and JB Pardiwala) upheld the Act and two judges dissented. Justice S Ravindra Bhat passed a dissent order calling the law discriminatory and violative of basic structure. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Uday Umesh Lalit also concurred with the view of Justice S Ravindra Bhat.


RBI imposes ₹1 lakh penalty on Pragati Mahila Nagarik Sahakari Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBl) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1.00 lakh (Rupees One lakh only) on Pragati Mahila Nagarik Sahakari Bank Maryadit, Bhilai (Chhattisgarh) for contravention of/ non-compliance with the directions issued by the RBI to Urban Co-operative Banks on “Exposure Norms and Statutory / Other Restrictions – Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs).

Background 

A scrutiny of the records of the bank based on its financial position as on March 31, 2021, revealed, inter alia, that the bank had sanctioned unsecured advances above the permissible limit in certain cases, in contravention of/ non-compliance with the aforesaid directions issued by RBI. Based on the same, a Notice was issued to the bank advising it to show cause as to why penalty should not be imposed for non-compliance with the directions.


VP Jagdeep Dhankhar on 3-day visit to Cambodia to attend ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit 

Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar will be on a 3-day visit to Cambodia from 11-13 November 2022 to attend the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit and the 17th East Asia Summit.

Background 

Cambodia is hosting the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit and the 17th East Asia Summit as the current Chair of ASEAN Vice President. The Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will be accompanied by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.


PM Modi to launches logo, theme, and website of India’s G20 Presidency on 8 Nov 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the logo, theme, and website of India’s G20 Presidency through video conferencing on 8th November 2022. India will assume the G20 Presidency from 1st December 2022.

G20 Meeting in India

G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation representing around 85 percent of the global GDP, over 75 percent of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.

During the course of its G20 Presidency, India will be holding about 200 meetings in 32 different sectors in multiple locations across India. The G20 Summit to be held next year, would be one of the highest profile international gatherings to be hosted by India.


EAM S Jaishankar on a two-day visit to Russia from today 

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will begin his two-day Russia visit today. S Jaishankar will hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in continuation of the regular high-level dialogue between the two sides.


Govt allows export of sugar upto 60 Lakh Metric Tonnes in 2022-23  

The government has allowed the export of sugar upto 60 Lakh Metric Tonnes during the sugar season 2022-23. The objective of this measure is to balance the price stability of sugar and the financial position of the sugar mills in the country.

Background 

The Central Government has prioritized availability of about 275 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT) sugar for domestic consumption, about 50 LMT sugar for diversion to ethanol production and to have closing balance of about 60 LMT as on 30.09.2023. Balance quantity of sugar produced by sugar mills in the country would be allowed for exports. Since at the beginning of sugar season 2022-23, initial estimates of sugarcane production are available, it has been decided to allow export of 60 LMT sugar. 

The sugarcane production in the country will be reviewed periodically and based on the latest available estimates, quantity of sugar exports to be allowed could be reconsidered.


Pramod Bhagat, Manisha Ramadass clinches Gold at BWF Para Badminton World Championship 2022

Indian star Para-badminton player Pramod Bhagat and Manisha Ramadass clinched the gold medals in singles at the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2022 in Tokyo.

Pramod Bhagat defeated compatriot Nitesh Kumar 21-19 21-19 to clinch the gold medal in the men's singles SL3 event.

The 17-year-old Manisha beat Mamiko Toyoda of Japan 21-15 21-15 to win the gold medal in the women's singles SU5 category.
