Poonam Gupta Takes Over As RBI Deputy Governor

Dr. Poonam Gupta took over as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Government of India appointed Poonam Gupta as Deputy Governor of RBI on April 02, 2025 for a term of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Poonam was the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). She also served as a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and as Convener of the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission.

Poonam Gupta Takes Charge As RBI Deputy Governor

Dr. Poonam Gupta took charge as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Government of India on April 02, 2025, appointed Poonam Gupta to the post of Deputy Governor of RBI for a period of three years from the date of joining the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Prior to this appointment, Poonam Gupta was the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER).

Poonam Gupta took over the appointment of Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) at Mumbai with effect from 2nd May 2025.

Role and Responsibilities of RBI Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta

As RBI Deputy Governor, Dr Poonam Gupta will be responsible for the Monetary Policy Department, Financial Markets Operations Department, Department of Economic and Policy Research, Department of Financial Stability, International Department, Department of Statistics and Information Management, Department of Corporate Strategy and Budget and Department of Communications.

About Poonam Gupta RBI Deputy Governor

Prior to RBI Deputy Governor, Poonam Gupta was the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). She also served as a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and as Convener of the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission.

Before joining NCAER, Dr. Gupta had worked at senior positions for nearly two decades at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. Dr. Gupta also taught at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Maryland (USA) and as a visiting faculty at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi.

Poonam has been the RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and a Professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).

Education Life of RBI Governor Poonam Gupta

The new Deputy Governor of RBI Poonam Gupta holds a Master’s degree and PhD in Economics from University of Maryland, USA, and a Master’s degree in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. She has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the 1998 EXIM Bank award for her PhD on International Economics.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

The Reserve Bank of India was established on April 1, 1935 according to the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The headquarters of the Reserve Bank was initially established in Kolkata but was permanently moved to Mumbai in 1937.

Initially the bank was privately owned, but since nationalization in 1949 it is fully owned by the Government of India.
