Indian-origin Ajay Banga confirmed as next World Bank President

Indian-origin Ajay Banga, who was the former head of Mastercard has been officially selected as the 14th President of the World Bank.

The Executive Directors of the World Bank elected Ajay Banga as the new President of the World Bank. Mr. Banga's five-year term begins on June 2, 2023.


Ajay Vij appointed Accenture India country managing director 

Global IT and consulting major Accenture has announced that Ajay Vij has been appointed to the newly created role of country managing director India, and Sandeep Dutta will take over as the lead for its India market unit.

Ajay Vij replaced Rekha M Menon who senior managing director and chairperson for Accenture in India will retire on June 30.


Global Chess League to be held in Dubai 

The Global Chess League (GCL), the world's largest and first franchise-based chess league, has announced Dubai as the venue for its inaugural edition from June 21 to July 2.

The joint venture between FIDE (International Chess Federation) and Tech Mahindra, a part of the Mahindra Group. The league will have six teams, each consisting of six players, including a minimum of two women players and one icon player per team.


WHO declared COVID-19 no longer represents a global health emergency 

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared that COVID-19 no longer represents a global health emergency.

WHO’s International Health Regulations Emergency Committee discussed the pandemic at its 15th meeting on COVID-19, and WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus concurred that the declaration of public health emergency of international concern should end.

The organization declared the coronavirus outbreak to be a public health emergency of international concern in January 2020, about six weeks before characterizing it as a pandemic.


Visa Launches CVV-Free Payments for Tokenised Cards 

Card payments company Visa has launched a feature that allows users to carry out online transactions without the need to punch in the cardholder verification value (CVV), if the card has been tokenised.

The feature applies to tokenised credit and debit cards and is only available for domestic transactions in India. 

Tokenized transactions are two-factor-authenticated and use an encrypted token instead of actual card details. In addition, they use a tokenized authentication verification value (TAVV) cryptogram for cardholder-initiated transactions.


Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra wins Doha Diamond League title 

Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has won the Doha Diamond League 2023 with a throw of 88.67m. This was Chopra's second win in a Diamond League Meeting.

Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch finished second with a throw of 88.63m, just four centimeters short of Chopra's mark. World Champion Andersen Peters finished third with a best throw of 85.88m.

Khelo India University Games 2022: Background 

The 12-day-long Khelo India University Games (KIUG) UP 2022 will be held in the cities of Varanasi, Noida and Gorakhpur, besides the state capital of Lucknow with Delhi’s Dr. Karni Singh Shooting range hosting the Shooting competition. The Kabaddi competition begins in Noida on May 23rd, 2023 while a few others begin at the various venues on May 24th, 2023, as well.

More than 4000 athletes from 200 Indian universities will compete in 21 sporting disciplines at the games which are officially scheduled from May 25-Jun 03, 2023. The opening ceremony is slated for May 25, 2023 in Lucknow.
