Government of India has appointed Dr. Poonam Gupta as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a period of three years from the date of joining the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Poonam Gupta is currently working as Director General, National Council of Applied Economic Research, New Delhi.

Govt Appoints Poonam Gupta As New Deputy Governor of RBI
Government of India (GoI) has appointed Dr. Poonam Gupta, Director General, National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi as Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Poonam Gupta has replaced M.D. Patra as the new Deputy Governor of RBI.

The current Director General is Dr Poonam Gupta, the tenth Director General of NCAER and the first woman to hold this position, formerly a Lead Economist at the World Bank.
Poonam Gupta's tenure as RBI Deputy Governor is for a period of three years from the date of assuming charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
About Poonam Gupta Deputy Governor, RBI
Poonam Gupta joined National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) in 2021 after working at senior positions for nearly two decades at the IMF and World Bank. In between, Gupta taught at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Maryland (USA) and as a visiting faculty at Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi.

She has also been the RBI Chair Professor at National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and a Professor at Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).
She is currently on the Boards of NIPFP and GDN (Global Development Network); member of the World Bank’s advisory groups for ‘Poverty & Equity’ and the ‘World Development Report’; member of the Development Advisory Committee of NITI Aayog; and FICCI’s Executive Committee. She was the Chair of the Task Force on Macroeconomics and Trade during India’s G20 Presidency.

Poonam Gupta's role and responsibilities at NCAER are to lead the work on macroeconomic issues related to monetary and fiscal policy, economic growth, international financial architecture, central banking and state finance.

The new Deputy Governor of RBI Poonam Gupta holds a Master’s degree and PhD in Economics from University of Maryland, USA, and a Master’s degree in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. She has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the 1998 EXIM Bank award for her PhD on International Economics.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
The Reserve Bank of India was established on April 1, 1935 according to the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The headquarters of the Reserve Bank was initially established in Kolkata but was permanently moved to Mumbai in 1937.

Initially the bank was privately owned, but since nationalization in 1949 it is fully owned by the Government of India.
