RBI Appoints Sanjay Kumar Hansda As New Executive Director

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Sanjay Kumar Hansda as Executive Director (ED). Hansda has replaced Shirish Chandra Murmu who was recently appointed as the Deputy Governor of RBI. Hansda reported back to the RBI on October 06, 2025, on completion of his deputation as Senior Advisor to ED (India), International Monetary Fund (IMF). Before being appointed ED of RBI, Sanjay Kumar Hansda was working as an advisor in the Department of Economic and Policy Research.

Sanjay Kumar Hansda Appointed As New Executive Director of RBI

Sanjay Kumar Hansda has been appointed as the new Executive Director (ED) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Hansda has replaced Shirish Chandra Murmu who was recently appointed as the Deputy Governor of RBI.

Hansda reported back to the central bank on October 06, 2025, on completion of his deputation as Senior Advisor to ED (India), International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Before being appointed Executive Director (ED) of RBI, Sanjay Kumar Hansda was working as an advisor in the Department of Economic and Policy Research.

As Executive Director of RBI, Sanjay Kumar Hansda will take charge of the Department of Economic and Policy Research.

About Sanjay Kumar Hansda ED of RBI

As a career central banker and researcher, Sanjay Kumar Hansda has experience of over three decades spanning from banking sector, money and credit, interest rates and liquidity, growth and inflation, financial and capital markets, industry and services, national and monetary accounts, savings and flow of funds, sovereign/ sub-sovereign cash and debt management to G-20 issues, and inter-regulatory coordination.

Hansda served as Adviser, Monetary Policy Department, and as Officer-in-Charge/Director, Internal Debt Management Department. He had a stint as Analyst (financial stability), Bank of England, on a secondment from the RBI.

He also served as a member of the committees set up by the Bank of England, Committee on the Global Financial System (CGFS), and Government of India besides many internal/external committees/working groups.

Educational Life of Sanjay Kumar Hansda

Sanjay Kumar Hansda is a post-graduate in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and a diploma holder in financial services management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, University of Mumbai.

About Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

The Reserve Bank of India was established on April 1, 1935 according to the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The headquarters of the Reserve Bank was initially established in Kolkata but was permanently moved to Mumbai in 1937.

Initially the bank was privately owned, but since nationalization in 1949 it is fully owned by the Government of India.
