India's eight core sectors grow by 5.1% in May

The Eight Core Industries comprise 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).

The combined Index of Eight Core Industries stood at 138.7 in May, 2019, which was 5.1 per cent higher as compared to the index of May, 2018. Its cumulative growth during April to May, 2019-20 was 5.7 per cent.

Coal

Coal production (weight: 10.33 per cent) increased by 1.8 per cent in May, 2019 over May, 2018. Its cumulative index increased by 2.5 per cent during April to May, 2019-20 over corresponding period of the previous year.

Crude Oil

Crude Oil production (weight: 8.98 per cent) declined by 6.9 per cent in May, 2019 over May, 2018. Its cumulative index declined by 6.8 per cent during April to May, 2019-20 over the corresponding period of the previous year.

Natural Gas

The Natural Gas production (weight: 6.88 per cent) growth stood at 0.0 per cent in May, 2019 over May, 2018. Its cumulative index declined by 0.4 per cent during April to May, 2019-20 over the corresponding period of the previous year......Read More


Highlights of the Eight Core Industries for the month of May, 2019 with Details


The cumulative growth of these industries during April-May 2019-20 was 5.7 per cent as compared to the growth of 4.4 per cent during April- May 2018-19.

The growth rate for ICI for April 2019 has been revised upward to 6.3 per cent from 2.6 per cent due to upward revisions in production of Coal, Crude Oil, Steel, Cement and Electricity.

Four out of the eight core industries registered a positive growth rate in May 2019 over May 2018.

Steel sector has registered double digit growth of 19.9 percent in the month of May 2019 over May 2018.

Electricity sector has registered growth of 7.2 percent in the month of May 2019 over May 2018, which is the highest in the last six months, i.e. since November 2018.

Electricity generation was 248.1 billion units during April-May 2019-20 as compared to 232.7 billion units in the same period of the previous year.

Cement and Coal sectors have registered moderate growth of 2.8 percent and 1.8 percent respectively in the month of May 2019 over May 2018.

The production of Coal was 58.62 million tonnes in May 2019 as compared to 56.35 million tonnes in April 2019.......Read More


Karnam Sekar takes over as new MD and CEO of IOB

Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), has appointed Karnam Sekar as its new Managing Director (MD)and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He replaces R Subramaniakumar.

 His appointment will come into effect on July 1, 2019.

 Prior to this appointment, Karnam Sekar was MD & CEO of Dena Bank.

SBI signs MoU with NIIF to finance infrastructure projects

India’s largest lender Bank, the State Bank of India (SBI), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF)  to boost availability of capital for infrastructure projects.

The objective of this initiative is to aid in filling the gap at a time when the availability of equity and debt financing for infrastructure has moderated.

N S Vishwanathan re-appointed Deputy Governor of RBI for one year

N S Vishwanathan was re-appointed as the deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for one more year with effect from July 4, 2019.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved re-appointment of Vishwanathan as the deputy governor for a period of one more year with effect from July 4 this year.

Vishwanathan tenure was to end Wednesday, 3 July.

Vishwanathan is in charge of regulation of banks, non-banking finance companies and cooperative banks.

Besides Vishwanathan, the other deputy governors of the RBI include B.P. Kanungo and M.K. Jain.


Odisha to host the 21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship 2019

The Odisha government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and the Odisha State Table Tennis Association (OSTTA)  for hosting the 21st edition of the Commonwealth Table 2019.

 It will be held from July 17-22, 2019 at the Jawaharlal Indoor Stadium in Cuttack, Odisha.
