What is Sangol and its importance in Indian History

What is Sangol?

The word Sangol is derived from the Sanskrit word for "शंकु". Which means "शंख". It is also linked to the expansion, influence and sovereignty of the state. In the Vedic tradition, Sangol is called "Scepter". It is five feet tall. It is made of gold and silver and was first used in the Maurya Empire (322–185 BC) to transfer power.

Sangol in Indian History

The history of Sangol is very old in Indian culture. It has great importance in independent India. On August 14, 1947, when the power of India was transferred by the British, it was done by this Sangol. That's why Sangol is considered a symbol of India's independence.

PM Modi installed Sangol in new Parliament

On 28 May 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the newly built Parliament House, the foundation stone of which was laid during the Corona period. Sangol will be installed near the Speaker's seat in this new Parliament House.

Nandi Maharaj is sitting on the top of Sangol to be installed in the new Parliament House. The Sangol is a unique symbol of Indian culture, whose history is linked to the transfer of power.

Home Minister Amit Shah shared this information that Sangol will be set up in the new Parliament House.

Sengol History

The history of Sangol is very old in the Indian tradition. The first Sengol was used in the Maurya Empire (322-185 BC) as a symbol of the emperor's power.

Similarly, historical evidence of Sangol is also found in its Gupta Empire (320-550 AD), Chola Dynasty (907-1310 AD) and Vijayanagara Empire (1336-1946 AD).

Apart from this, the Mughals and the British also used Sangol as a symbol of their authority and power and sovereignty of the empire.

After independence, Sangol was kept in the museum of Prayagraj. Which will now be installed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi near the Chairman's place in the new Parliament House.
