CWG-2022: Indian men's table tennis team clinches Gold medal at Birmingham Commonwealth Games

Commonwealth Games 2022: Indian men's table tennis team clinched the gold medal after beating Singapore 3-1 in the final event at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games (CWG 2022).

The Indian team comprised of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Sharath Kamal, Harmeet Desai and Sanil Shetty to win the historic gold in table tennis at the CWG 2022.

With this, India’s medal tally reaches 12 with 5 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals.

About Sathiyan Gnanasekaran

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran was born into a middle-class family of elite academicians. His parents couldn’t afford to pay his school fees till 3rd standard, however, he managed to complete his school education. He hails from Chennai and started playing Table tennis as a hobby.

Sathiyan’s talent was spotted by former Indian paddler Subramanian Raman, who tempted him to pursue the sport seriously. In May 2019, Sathiyan attained his career best World ranking of 24 and became the first Indian paddler ever to break into the World Top-25 ITTF rankings. Sathiyan holds a degree in Information Technology from the St Joseph College of Engineering, Chennai. He became national champion for the first time in 2021 beating ten-time champion Sharath Kamal. Sathiyan Gnanasekaran received the Arjuna Award in 2018.

About Sharath Kamal

Sharath Kamal was introduced to Table Tennis by his father A. Srinivasa Rao and uncle, Muralidhara Rao at a very young age. Besides being a major player in the Table tennis circuit for over the two decades, Sharath also holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Loyola College. 

A ten-time Senior National Champion, Sharath Kamal is still the flagbearer of Indian Table Tennis and inspiring youngsters to take up the sport. Sharath’s abilities in the sport and his passion & drive are clear to see as he is still amongst the highest ranked TT players in the world at 40 years old. Sharath Kamal was awarded the Padma Shri in 2019.

About Harmeet Desai

Hailing from Surat, Gujarat, Harmeet Desai has represented India for many years. Having become the first athlete from the state of Gujarat to break into the World Top 100 in 2017, Harmeet has paved the way for more athletes from the state to burst onto the national scene. 

Harmeet Desai followed up his two medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and a team bronze in the 2018 Asian Games with two golds at the 2019 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships in 2019.

Harmeet Desai became the Men’s Singles national champion in 2019 and also received the Arjuna Award the same year.

About Sanil Shetty

Sanil Shetty began playing Table Tennis at the age of 9 when he witnessed his brother winning a trophy. His first coach was Deepak Mani and he began playing under his tutelage. Sanil comes from a family of TT players, his father used to play for IDBI bank and elder brother played at university level. 

Sanil Shetty won his first title at the age of 10. Sanil Shetty has won the Table Tennis National Championship three times in the singles category (Sub-junior, Junior and Men’s)
